Vikings take giant step towards play-off

Vikings take giant step towards play-off

    Dublin City 5-1 Monaghan United
Dublin City exploited Cobh Ramblers’ slip-up in Dundalk to take a major step towards a place in the promotion/relegation play-off with victory over Monaghan United at Whitehall on Saturday night.

The Vikings went into the weekend a point behind the Cork men, but victory here, combined with Cobh’s 0-0 draw at Oriel Park, put Dermot Keely’s side in pole position to book a meeting with Shamrock Rovers later this month.

Alan Kelly headed the home side ahead after 10 minutes, but Monaghan’s top scorer Philip Hughes fired his eighth goal of the season eight minutes before the break.

However, the game changed in Dublin’s favour just before half-time, with Monaghan striker Gavin Hughes dismissed by referee Dan Deady after handling on the goal-line, and David Freeman converted from the spot.

Second half goals from substitute Alan Mulcahy, Ben Whelehan and Ray Scully sealed an emphatic victory for Dublin, who can seal a place in the play-off by defeating Athlone Town next week.

Dublin City: Gallagher, McGill, Hedderman, Keely, Whelehan, Shiels, Scully, A. Kelly (Williamson, 86), Freeman, Collins (Mulcahy, 64), Vaughan.

Monaghan United: Horgan, Murphy, Malone, Doyle, Foy, Whelan (Quinn, 74), Fullam, Finnegan, Reilly, P. Hughes, G. Hughes

He is not getting a lot of football, when he does play he looks a little nervous but he has potential.

In fairness to the boy ..

.. players normally leave United because of money or indiscipline.
I wish him well in his neverending quest for first team football !

    PD.
