FAI working in the community

In 1998 the Government established the Young Peoples Facilities and Services Fund as part of the preventative pillar of the National Drugs Strategy.

Implemented under the guidance of Minister Noel Ahearn this Fund was established to provide services and facilities for young people at risk of drug use between the ages of 10 - 21 years and offer them healthier and more productive pursuits.

The measures that have been funded and supported to date including;

The employment by youth service organisations of youth work teams in Local Drugs Task Force areas

The construction of a large number of dedicated youth centres

The contribution of finance towards the construction of large scale multi purpose facilities

The employment of outreach workers, street workers, etc

The provision of educational, health, peer support programmes for young people at risk
