A superb Johnny Martin strike just after the hour gave Longford all three points in this tight and ultimately meaningless mid-table clash in Flancare Park. Although both sides created chances, it always looked as if one goal would win the game, and it was Town on whom Lady Luck smiled.
UCD made just one enforced change from the team which had secured safety in Donegal the previous week - Stephen Hurley was injured, so Derek Doyle came in on the wing. Ronan Finn was named on the subs bench for the first time. Doyle had one of UCD's better chances in the opening half when his attempt to live the eircom League dream and chip diminutive Longford keeper Stephen O'Brien from outside the box was just over. At the other end, Darren Quigley was largely kept quiet, though he had a let off when a low cross from the right squirmed out of his grasp.
UCD started the second half brightly, and Pat McWalter threatened on a couple of occasions while Tony McDonnell had a shot blocked after a scramble on the six yard area. However, it was Longford who took the lead on the 66th minute. John Martin was played through and drilled a powerful shot in off the near post with Quigley stranded. Ironically, it was very similar to a goal he had scored at the same ground nearly five years previously - for UCD against Town.
UCD boss Pete Mahon was evidently looking towards next season when bringing on Kieran Harte and Ronan Finn in midfield, although Tony McDonnell did have a great chance to equalise towards the end, but his powerful close range header was blocked on the line by Stephen O'Brien, making his last home appearance for Longford, and Longford reacted quicker to scramble clear.
UCD - Quigley; Mahon, O'Donnell, Kenna, Shortall; McDonnell, McWalter, Dicker (Harte 60), D Doyle (Finn 70); Dupuy (W Doyle 75), Martin. Subs not used - Gallagher, Gannon
