According to Steven Reid, he would be a popular choice with the players

Steve would do a good job
I was interested to hear that the former Republic of Ireland player Steve Staunton has been linked with the vacant manager's job with the national team. When I first got involved in the international set-up Steve was a team-mate of mine and I remember him fondly.
I particularly recall Steve being a big help to the youngsters in the squad. He was always there for me when I needed advice and he was definitely somebody who helped to make life easier for me when I first joined up with the squad. He was one of those senior players who was only too happy to find time for the newcomers in the squad by talking to them about the game.
I know that Steve's still playing at Walsall but by all accounts he's also a very good coach, so I can understand why he's being linked with the job. I'm sure that all the players who played alongside him at the 2002 World Cup would be delighted to see him as part of the new regime. The FAI has a lot of options for the post, so we will have to wait and see what happens on that score. At the moment his name is just being linked, nothing more than that.
As for my own situation at the moment it's not that great to be honest. I've not played the last few matches for Blackburn which has been a little bit frustrating.
However, Robbie Savage is carrying a knock and is touch and go for this weekend's match at home to Charlton so I may get a recall. I'm suffering from a cold so I'm not 100 per cent fit myself, but if I'm needed by the gaffer I will definitely make myself available.
I'm itching to stake my claim for a return to the side as I feel my form has been pretty good this season. Charlton at home isn't easy because of their tremendous away record, but we're building a head of steam ourselves and are confident of a win.
