Galway United travel to Station Road on Saturday evening eager to stitch another game to its current unbeaten sequence.

Stephen Lally's side have not been defeated since September 23 when Monaghan United pinched victory at Terryland Park. However since that harrowing reversal, the Tribesmen have gone five games without a loss.

Last Thursday's scoreless draw at Oriel Park also was a notable achievement considering the artificial surface. Now United face a Kildare County outfit that has self destructed somewhat in recent weeks.

The Thoroughbreds came within a whisker of attaining promotion last season, but it has been a disappointing year for Kildare's expensively assembled collection of footballers.

Galway's form certainly offers supporters some comfort. Alan Gough registered his 10th league clean sheet against Dundalk with an assured goalkeeping display.

Alan Keane's emergence as a diligent defender has been most impressive and the Abbeyknockmoy youngster repeatedly thwarted the Lilywhites at Oriel Park. Earlier this season Ger McCarthy tormented United on the Dyke Road, netting a brace of neat goals, but Keane eclipsed the pacey frontrunner last weekend. Indeed, McCarthy's woes were compounded when he was dismissed late in the game after becoming frustrated with the excellent Keane.

Billy Clery has guided Keane through his first five senior appearances efficiently and the early portents suggest this could be a fruitful partnership. Nigel Keady's switch to right full offers the team aggression in this position and the skipper's footballing nous is a real asset in this demanding position.

Liam McKenna was a substitute on Thursday and it is pleasing to see the first of Mervue United's u-16 Barry Cup winning team of two years ago graduating to Eircom League level. Hopefully some of McKenna's former colleagues will also feature in the Galway United shirt in the coming years.

United's midfield has been prompted in splendid fashion by Mixie Harty and the wide threat carried by Derek O'Brien has troubled many defences in a competitive first division. The Tralee native now returns to Station Road, the scene of his remarkable goal earlier in the season. That success was illuminated by an electric Eric Lavine cameo and a similar performance from the Bajan will be required in Newbridge.

Though promotion still remains a mathematical possibility, United must garner three victories and hope Cobh fail to pick up more than a point in their remaining games. Even though the chances are slim, Stephen Lally's charges will travel to Station Road with equal measures of hope and expectation.

United travel away for the second week running to take on Kildare County in their penultimate away game of the season. Available after suspension are John Russell and Nicky Curran. Ronan Frawley is expected to return after he missed the away game last week with an ankle injury. Mixie Harty is doubtful due to illness while Billy Clery is suspended.
