Should Lee Trundle be in the next Ireland squad?

well i voted no becuase i personally dont think he is good enough. The logic shouldnt be that if the likes of connolly, mahon, doherty or whoever got playing that trundle should be included. none of these players are good enough and if they were we wouldnt be preparing to watch another major tournament from afar. The international game here can no longer rely on another country to develop our players and it was always a matter of time before our luck with each generation having some wonderful players ran out .
Unless the FAI change tact we're going to end up like other small nations who struggle for players and end up picking players from the nether regions of the english league. if we're discussing the inclusion of the likes of trundle then we're in trouble. Jason Byrne has scored 21 league goals in the Prem Division but unfortunately our country doesnt have the hype or the media coverage to push his case forward unlike in the UK. But then again if byrne had scored 1/2/3/4 goals in europe our bandwagon press would be calling for his inclusion.

Probably not by the sound of things. Gary Breen wouldn't, Kilbane wouldn't. I'm prepared to accept this guy's bona fides.

I'd actually be happy to approach Liam Lawrence & Neil Kilkenny again if they're eligible.

I voted no.

Most people seem to be willing to give him a chance based on comparing him to Macken or Doherty. Well those two aren't good enough for the Irish squad either IMO.

If I get knocked down for using that Criteria for pushing EL forwards, I don't see why it can apply to Trundle. He's either playing at a high enough standard or he's not.

At the moment, he's not! that's all there is to it.

got to be in the next squad for me .. how many irish strikers are scoring frequently in england at the mo ?? quality player and from the games ive seen should be playing at a much higher level but is loyal to swansea.. why the **** not ??? if macken and doherty can get in why not trundle ..

so is that the conclusion then...that nearly 62% of the people on this forum who are knowledgable about lee trundle, want him in the next ireland squad. i think thats quite a convincing argument

Like the knowledgable person who voted yes because....
"anyone who is scoring goals in the English PL or Coke C should be at least in the squad and should get a few cracks at playing too".
Trundle plays in neither the English PL or the Coke Championship.

You have the majority on your side as it is, but the question asked wasn't "Do you want Lee Trundle in the next Irish Squad?" so you can't claim 62% want him in the squad, you can only state that 62% are willing to give him his shot.

It's kind of funny really.

I wouldn't be one to say you have to be playing at a high level to get into the squad and what I've seen of Trundle he definitely has the ability to be 3rd/4th choice striker for us which is all thats needed really.

Include Trundle by all means. We'll only be playing friendlies and part of the argument for getting rid of Kerr was friendlies don't matter a fig.

you may feel it was a 'poor stating the obvious, summary' but in promoted a response, either in agreement or disagreement...which is all what this forum is about. in regards to the statement that it can't be claimed that 62% of the voters want lee trundle in the next irish squad then that is simply ridiculous. the fact here, is that it cant be claimed that 62% are willing to give him a shot, however it can be claimed that 62% want him in the next irish squad as that is what the question asked.

that doesnt stand up livi, anyway tis a well known fact that the majority of football fans (not all) are anything but knowledgeble on the game

would this be the majority who wanted Kerr in the hot seat? and the same majority who would have given the man another run at it ? if this be the case then im happily in the minority on this one.

Trundle,is good enough but too old for the next w.c., which we are now building for, by then he will just be in the way of young talent,just as others were in Elliots way this time round, who shouldnt have been there.

and while we are at it, what of Leon Best? where is he hanging his international hat these days,tell me?

wtf?!?! how do you mean he is too old? why should age have anything to do with it? if he can maintain the fitness level it doesn't matter. he has only been a pro-footballer for around 5 years so his body has not been through nearly as much as most. also, take a look at some of the players in the permiership who would be good enough for the ireland squad. de zeeuw, sheringham, k.campbell, shearer, ferguson,and theres numerous other examples. age has nothing to do with it, i refer again to john aldridge.

about leon best...well if only i knew, aint heard feck all for a while now, which is probably a good sign, although hes not back to fitness yet so i wonder if it would matter a damn. one thing that i would love to find out tho, is do these international managers ask the players if they want to be called up before actually picking them? i mean, kevin nolan didnt exactly look delighted with his call up did he?

I'm not really interested in getting into a pedantic argument and dragging it off topic but the question clearly asked is ''Should Lee Trundle be in the next Squad?'' not ''Do you want Lee Trundle in the next squad?''. Read the posts in the thread, few are saying they want him in the squad, it's more that given the lack of striking options we have they think he should be looked at.

I just found it funny that you got the result you wanted but you felt the need to oversell what the result was, c'mon like, knowledgeable?

No need for the rolleyes either, the smiley's at the end of my post were meant to signify that my post was tongue in cheek.

agreed i dont "want" him in the next squad , ie i dont wake up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat worrying that he might not be in it , but i would be willing to give him a chance if only for a bit of fun

I think we're going to see Trundle snapped up by a Championship club after Christmas. He's in outstanding form at the moment. It wouldn't surprise me if a club like Sheffield Wednesday or Norwich got hold of him. For instance, Norwich might be forced to sell Dean Ashton to a Premiership club and see Trundle as a replacement.
