    UCD's Foreign Legion

Here is a list of some of the players from other countries who have played for UCD in the League of Ireland:-

Goalkeeper : Stefan Backes ( Germany) Made 1 appearance at the RDS against Shamrock Rovers at the end of the 1995/96 season when Seamus Kelly missed his only game of the season.

Right back :Shaun Lowther (Canada) English born naturalised Canadian citizen who was on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps. He came up through the Youth teams of Manchester United but was originally from South Shields in the North East of England. Played for UCD from 1980/81 through to 1982/83 inclusive.

Left back: Hugh Davey (Northern Ireland) Capped at Under 21 level by the Wee North while at the club, Hugh was a member of our First Division promotion winning side of 2004 and left the club for a scholarship in the USA.

Centre back : Carl Shearer ( Canada) Another one of the players who came on loan from the Vancouver Whitecaps. Shearer had his spell in the UCD first team in the 1981/82 season.

Right midfield: Sammy Saundh (Canada) Small slightly built winger who also came on loan from the Vancouver Whitecaps in the 1981/82 season. Played very well for UCD.

Centre- midfield: Dave Norman (Canada) Glasgow born midfielder who became a naturalised Canadian and played for Canada at the Mexico World Cup of 1986. Played for UCD from 1980/81 to 1982/83. He was a regular first team player who scored 7 league goals during his time at Belfield.

Centre-midfield: Janos Lenart (Hungary) Now I am a little spoiled for choice here but this guy was one of the most talented ever to play for the club.
Joined UCD in 1989 from Izzo Vac in Hungary to whom he returned shortly afterwards. He only played 3 games for the club in the 1989/90 season before returning home to Hungary suffering homesickness, he scored a cracking goal in Athlone Town and played superbly in this brief spell at UCD. The tragedy was that we did not get to see him perform over an entire season.

Centre midfield : Peter Burke (Australia) One of three sons of the Australian Ambassador to Ireland in the late 1980's. He signed for UCD in 1988 and was a regular in the first team that season. His brother Matt was a regular in the B team and his older brother Tom was a regular first team player as a striker until injury ended his career. Peter was an elegant skillful player who lost his place in the team the following season.

    Left-midfield: Zoltan Istvan (Hungary)
A native of Baja in Hungary who joined UCD in 1989 along with four of his fellow countrymen. The others including Lenart, Mogyoriosi only had brief first team spells. Zoltan was a regular that whole season. He was dead ball specialist scoring from free-kicks and creating goals from corner-kicks. After three seasons at UCD he moved to Monaghan United and in all spent around 6 seasons in the League. Returned to Hungary in the mid-1990's.

Forward: Ralston Dunlop (Canada) Joined UCD in the 1980/81 season on loan from Vancouver Whitecaps and was second highest goalscorer that season.
Tall target man he was by far one of the most effective imports the club has had to date.

Forward: Damien Dupuy (France). After a career in the Third and Fourth Divisions in his native country he joined Galway United in 2004 and scored 13 goals for them that season. Moved to UCD in 2005 and while not as prolific a goalscorer won the fans admiration for his workrate .

If you're going to count Hughie Dave as foreign (how is NI foreign?!), you could add in two other NI-born players, Robbie Mac and Ciarán Kavanagh.

Using the rule of thumb that if you play for another jurisdiction you are ineligible to play for the Republic i.e. you become foreign!
Only cause Hughie Dave actually played for them I was trying to field an entire team for crying out loud. Do you know any other UCD left-backs who are from outside the Republic apart from Robbie Mac( who is uncapped for NI at any level)?

Subs: PATRICK JENNINGS (Northern Ireland) Goalkeeper
English born son of the legendary Northern Ireland international goalkeeper capped 119 times for the wee North. The son was capped at all levels for the wee North bar senior. Former Cardiff City, Wimbledon and Tottenham Hotspur player joined UCD in 2001 and was the first choice keeper in the summer season of 2003. He joined Derry City at the start of the 2004 season but has not been able to nail down the no. 1 shirt currently second fiddle to David Forde.

    SANDOR MAROTI Forward (Hungary)
Joined the club in the late 1990's having scored 33 League goals in the Hungarian Second Division the previous season. Did not play a competitive game for the first team during his brief spell at UCD and returned home before the season got underway in any serious manner.

    BELA TETTAMANTI : Forward (Hungary)
Tall Gangly and ungainly player who never lacked for effort even if he lacked for pace. Played up front but was out of his depth unfortunately. But we all love a trier and Bela tried more than most. Joined UCD from Ujpest Dozsa's youth team and had two spells at UCD. The first was in the 1989/90 season and he returned three years later and played in the B team.

    RICKY VARADIN Forward (Slovakia)
The first Slovak to play for any UCD team , this boy from Bratislava came to the club in 1992 and played in the 1992/93 League Cup campaign at the start of the season. He missed his family, he missed his home town but above all he missed his mott and returned home before the League season began. For all that played well and nicked a goal in one of the group games.

    CLAY MERRITT: Centre-back (USA)
American native who had two spells at UCD. In his first spell as an exchange student he failed to make the B team. In his second spell as a Masters Student he was a regular in the B team and was on the verge of making the bench for the first team by the end of the second spell with the club.

    TOM BURKE : Centre-back/Forward (Australia)
The second of the Burke brothers to make the first team. Scored the winning goal in a 1-0 away win over Sligo in our promotion season, one of his 2 League goals in his 15 first team appearances, before injuries sustained in a relatively minor car accident ended his career. Joined the priesthood later on in his career.

Hughie Dave is technically eligible for Ireland. I didn't notice that you'd worked out an entire team though.

What about Jonathon Treacy for Left-Back he emigrated to Australia for a year. He was a foreigner when he was in Australia.

Also anyone he didn't know CTID was putting together a team, needs to read posts more with slowly.
