Exclamation 2006 eircom League Key Dates

The eircom League has decided upon a number of key dates in relation to the 2006 season:

The first transfer window will commence on December 1st and end on February 22nd. The eircom League Annual General Meeting will take place on January 28th, the 2006 league fixtures will be announced on February 13th and the eircom League 2006 season will commence on Friday, March 10th.

It was also agreed that there will be no fixtures from Friday 9th June to Sunday 18th June inclusive due to the staging of the World Cup 2006 Finals in Germany. The commencement of the season one week earlier than in the previous three seasons is in order to facilitate this break.

The second transfer window will run for the calendar month of July, i.e. from July 1st to 31st inclusive.

All 22 clubs have been invited to make submissions to the League in relation to the format of the 2006 eircom League season and have until November 14th to do so if they wish.

Finally, no friendly matches involving eircom League clubs will be approved for the period Friday 27th January 2006 to Sunday 29th January 2006 inclusive due to the Annual Referees Seminar taking place during those dates.

sincerely hope a numbe (if not all !) clubs will make representations that the FAI Cup Final should be held the weekend after the league season finishes - not 2 weeks later as this year.

I know this is an Eircom League Committee, but they are surely in a position to make representations to the FAI over the timing of the cup.

Also interesting to see that the Transfer window opens before the Cup Final is played, which is a mistake in my point of view. Albeit unlikely - it still creates the potential for a team to sign a player who isn't already cup-tied, purely for the Final. That team would get a boost to their squad, whilst the player could get a wedge of cash and the prospect of a winner's medal for only 90mins of effort. I wonder are there any decent players in the league who aren't cup-tied already (e.g. who were injured, suspended or not played for the first round proper, and their team got knocked out).

A decision has also been made to appoint referees to most games - even on Monday nights in Belfield.

A player must be signed for a club for 14 days before they can play in the cup so the issue of a club signing a player purely for the cup final can't really arise.

What format considerations can there possibly be?! We know there's one up, one down and a play-off, so there's 12 teams in the Premier next season. Number of rounds is a no-brainer, especially with the dates set. There's talk about some clubs proposing a ten-team Premier or a 22-team league for next season. Surely we aren't going to have a situation where a team could finish in tenth, four or five points above the play-off and yet still go down? The deadline is before the end of the season - is the Premier Division team in the play-off likely to change?! Somebody tell me I'm missing something here!
