Doolin pays no heed to Longford difficulties

Drogheda United manager Paul Doolin denies that Longford Town’s dreadful recent form makes his side’s task any easier at Flancare Park tonight (Saturday).

Longford have gone six games without a win, a run which has seen them concede four goals to Shamrock Rovers and, last weekend, five to Finn Harps.

But Doolin, whose side are on the crest of a wave after booking their FAI Carlsberg Cup final place last week, insists he is paying no attention to the midlanders’ recent form.

He said: “Longford are not on a great run. I think they’ve only picked up one point out of their last 12 but that won’t matter on Saturday night.

“Because they were beaten 5-0 by Finn Harps and we beat Finn Harps, it doesn’t mean that we go out and beat them 10-0. Football doesn’t work like that.”#

A first half own goal from captain Barry Ferguson extended Longford Town’s poor run of form against FAI Carlsberg Cup finalists Drogheda United at Flancare Park on Saturday night.

The former Coventry City man turned Sami Ristila’s cross into his own net after 29 minutes, and the off-colour midlanders were unable to find a route back into the game over the final hour.

An evening of wind and rain ensured that flowing football was at a premium, and in spite of the conditions – or perhaps because of them – both sides managed to create several chances.

Longford keeper Stephen O’Brien did well to save Ristila’s early effort after good work from Simon Webb, while at the other end Ferguson and Davy Byrne spurned openings for the home side.

Ferguson was luckless shortly before the half hour, turning Ristila’s cross past O’Brien after Gavin Whelan had initiated the attack with a fine tackle and pass.

Just before the break, Dessie Baker’s effort found Jason Gavin in the way, while the former Shelbourne man saw a deep cross beat Dan Connor but came back off the woodwork.

Longford Town: O’Brien, O’Connor (Myler, 81), Ferguson, Dillon, Prunty, Baker (Gough, 75), Fitzgerald, Martin, Byrne, Mooney, Keegan.

Not much Dyl10, **** goal to give away and really I thought we were unlucky not to get something from the game. Terrible playing conditions, terrible attendance

glad to see that section o didnt move from their spot I wasnt there at the match. Over in London for the weekend. Were town much addition at all? heard from one of the lads that only 400 people were at the game. Thats pretty poor stuff.

It wasn't a great match and there was about 700 in attendance.The effort couldn't be faulted but the performance was below par although we were a bit unlucky.Barry was very unfortunate but made the right decision in going for the ball.There's not much that can be said about the match really.

I wasn't impressed by what I saw on saturday night. Weather conditions aside, it was for the most part a poor and disjointed performance against an out of sorts Drogheda outfit suffering from recent cup fever. We created little clear cut chances and lacked any kind of conviction going forward. Neither Baz nor Daz look convincing at the back. I really hope we can redeem ourselves friday night in Dalier and give our supporters something to cheer about. It has been a depressing season and i'm hoping for major changes in personnel in the near future.
