    Irwin issues Fergie apology

Former Manchester United and Republic of Ireland star Denis Irwin has apologised to United boss Sir Alex Ferguson after linking the Scot to the Irish manager’s job last week.

Irwin claimed that the FAI had already made contact with Ferguson about replacing Brian Kerr – a declaration that was subsequently rubbished by the United supremo.

Speaking to United’s official television channel, MUTV, on Wednesday, the Cork man said: “I have apologised to Sir Alex. I was disappointed to read the comments because it was a lot of nonsense.

"If anybody knows me, I have the least interest in the political side of football. Someone got carried away and the piece didn’t go out the way I wanted it to. But it is my fault and I have to live with it.

"Sir Alex has been at Manchester United for so long, it would be hard for him to take another job. I did say in my article that he was under contract. Someone put two and two together and got five."

I don't know what to make of this story, I think there might be some truth in it. Obviously those at the centre of the story are going to strongly deny its accuracy as to fuel the rumours would make Fergusons position untenable at Old Trafford. I genuinely think there could be more in this story yet and Ferguson is waiting to see how the season will go.

Have to question Irwin's own role in this and I reckon he's trying to shift blame now as not to fall foul of Ferguson. Why would Ferguson put his reputation on the line with Ireland and possibly undo all he's done at United? Its a non-starter for me, not because I don't want him(and I don't but because he has stated United will be his last job.
