    Setanta Places

What's the story now with Setanta places???

If Cork win a double or Derry win the league and Cork win the cup or so and and so on..................... who'll get the places????

i'd imagine the fai will make up the rules for that one when the season is over, and they decide which teams they would rather go forward.

the fairest i'd imagine is the two cup winners and top two in the league. any cross-over in places, then go to third and then fourth (if necessary) in the league.

pretty much cork, derry and shels gauranteed. if we win the cup then us, if cork win the cup then whoever finished fourth out of ourselves, bohs or longford

europe is a bit easier. cork win the league and its sorted before the final - cork champions league, derry and drogs uefa, and shels intertoto. derry win the league and it gets a bit more interesting, but assuming we get fourth (very tight, and not convinced that we'll hold on) but a cork win in the cup would then swap our uefa spot with shels intertoto spot.

if we dont finish fourth, and cork beat us, after derry beating them to the league, well then either longford or bohs get the intertoto. but none of the teams going for fourth are doing convincingly lately so that could go any which way.

    simple!

Setanta places go to the european (non-intertoto) qualifiers plus one extra into the league as Derry qualified through the league cup.

This the official ruling from the eL office for entry to the Setanta Cup:

    Entry Process
The Tournament shall be on invitational basis only and invitations shall
be issued by both Associations to four clubs under their jurisdiction taking into
account the following sporting criteria listed in order of priority:

Clubs under the jurisdiction of the FAI:

    * 2005 season Premier Division League championship winners.

    * 2005 season FAI Cup winners. In the event of a club winning
the Premier Division League championship and the FAI Cup, then the
runner-up club in the FAI Cup shall be invited.

    * 2005 season League Cup winners.

    * 2005 season Premier Division League championship runners-up.

In the event of a club(s) qualifying to receive an invitation under two
or more of the above listed criteria or a club(s) failing to meet other
specified criteria in the regulations, then the invitation(s) shall be
issued to the next highest placed club(s) in the final 2005 season
    Premier Division League championship table.

Only area for debate is if Cork finish 2nd in the League and then win the FAI Cup.

It looks like Drogheda wont be offered the place as Cork are not the champions?

Correct, as Drogheda will not have qualified for the UEFA Cup.

Because it is linked to the european places. Last season the places went to the european qualifiers. This season they go to the european qualifiers plus the league cup winners. That final place reverted to the league as Derry have qualified twice.

What criteria might these be? Not being called Shelbourne perhaps?

We want Cork to win the Cup and Derry the league, in that instance we get into the UEFA cup, otherwise we'll have to win the Intertoto to get into the UEFA!!
