    CAF - African Nations Cup

    Not so blue everybody.

There's a wee competition starting next January on the Med.

I'm trying to talk myself into going for a couple of weeks.
    There's no reason why I shouldn't

With mascots like this, I could be in Europe still.

The Egyptian Assoc. may be helpful also.

The draw is on Oct. 20th 2005 and I've just realised there is a World Football forum.

    Country v. Club

    Cote d'Ivoire name squad
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/foot...ca/4575808.stm
    Squad:

Goalkeepers: Boubacar Barry (Beveren), Gerard Gnanhouan (Montpellier), Jean-Jacques Tizie (Esperance)
Defenders: Arthur Boka (Racing Strasbourg), Guy Demel(Hamburg SV), Cyrille Domoraud (Creteil), Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal), Seydou Kante (Beveren), Blaise Kossi Kouassi (Troyes), Abdoulaye Meite (Olympique Marseille), Kolo Toure (Arsenal), Marc Zoro (Messina)
Midfielders: Kanga Akale (AJ Auxerre), Abdoulaye Djire (Beveren), Emerse Fae (Nantes), Christian Koffi Ndri (Le Mans), Marco Ne (Beveren), Siaka Tiene (St Etienne), Gilles Yapi Yapo (Nantes), Gneri Yaya Toure (Olympiakos Piraeus), Didier Zokora (St Etienne)
Strikers: Aruna Dindane (Racing Lens), Didier Drogba (Chelsea), Bonaventure Kalou (Paris St Germain), Arouna Kone (PSV Eindhoven), Bakary Kone (Nice), Kandia Traore (Le Havre).

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger wants his Ivorian defenders Kolo Toure and Emmanuel Eboue to delay their departures for the MTN Africa Cup of Nations by more than a week.
    http://www.egypt2006.com.eg/English/...ourwangx70.htm

The biennial debate heats up. M. Wenger wishes to delay players involvement in their countries squad which restricts teamwork and knowledge of their teammates.

Arsenal were central to African country v. European club debate in the late nineties when they had Nwanko Kanu (African Player of the Year) on their books. The club had no problem selling merchandise all over Africa, but did the player get to play in all the games he should have? no.

Nice squad there. If they're squad is of a similar nature for the WC06 they could go far.

There are two sides to this. The commercial arguement that you outline above is fairgame, but in all fairness why is this tournament held in the middle of the season, in the same year as the World Cup? The CAF is reknowned for being a mess, I can't remember the surname of the previous president Issa ? but he was brutal! And was constantly being queried for bribery.

There is a straightforward solution to this. Play the African nations cup at the same time as the european championships. That would be the obvious solution.

I think the temperatures in Africa during the Summer would be way to hot to play football I think thats why it is in January Feb, Could be wrong here though.

I thought of that myself as a reason, but I'd be sure that they play qualifying games during the summer like the other regions.
