All betting suspended on new manager

    Taken from eleven-a-side.com
    Burley linked with Irish job

    October 22, 2005

George Burley has been linked with the vacant Irish manager’s job after parting company with Scottish Premier League leaders Hearts in sensational circumstances on Saturday afternoon.

Burley only joined the Edinburgh club in the summer and guided them to the top of the SPL table after a stunning 10-game unbeaten start to the season.

But rumours of a difficult relationship with the club’s Lithuanian owner, Vladimir Romanov, have never been far from the surface and news of his departure was conveyed to news agencies at around lunchtime on Saturday – two hours before Hearts’ SPL clash with Dunfermline Athletic.

That has led to feverish speculation as to his future, with the Scot the latest name to be linked with the Irish job made vacant by the departure of Brian Kerr earlier this week.

Burley is a highly-respected manager, having led unfashionable Ipswich Town to European competition in his time in charge at Portman Road, and the possibility that he could be in line for the Irish job is considered so real that betting was suspended by bookmakers across the UK and Ireland.

The bookies must be making a fortune on this. Houghton was backed off the board the last time and was nowhere close to getting the job. The fact that MON hasn't said anything yet is interesting and might mean he will take the job.

It could be a manager thats not even on their list.

I saw Morten Olsen on the BetFair odds list, he could be a great manager. I was very impressed with him at Ajax and his Danish teams have always played attractive football.

Yeah but he was dealing with dutch and danish technically perfect footballers

How about Henrik Larsson, ex-European Champion, current boss of the Faroes?? Their results don't accurately reflect his managerial ability.

Or is he ruled out because he's not in England??

Exactly. Less talk of the Troussiers of this world. They're perfect for Africans who can actually do the odd bit of skill, but its pointless here. One of Kerr's problems was that his side were expected to compete with technically superior teams on the same level. Got to be a football manager from the 'Brit' school of thought, who can kick a few ars*s to raise their game or tell them to f*ck off, because we ain't gonna be playing any beautiful football. Those that that think we can, need to f*cking wake up and get off their barstools.

I dunno, I wouldn't call Denmark technically perfect.

The thing is, Kerr tried the long ball "let's kick some arse" kind of football but that didn't work out either, 'cause Duff, Keane, Reid and Elliott aren't the type of players who can compete for headers. We don't have the players for Jack Charlton football either.

I think we're fooked no matter what kind of football we play.

Wim Jansen did a fantastic job at celtic with footballers not overly blessed with technical ability. I think it would be a serious mistake to limit ourselves to one particular style of manager. Our team deserves better.

Agree, we made the Cypriopts look like Brazil, our lot couldn't control the ball or even if they manged to do that the pass went astray or the ball was hoofed into the stand

no news from managers is good news. IF a manager doesnt want the job they usually come out very quickly and say so ala Fergie and jack charlton

MoN may well want the job or could be so focused on his wifes cancer that he has no time for the media. He could also be holding out for the Man Utd job.

    Dunphy it is so

I'd agree with you about Denmark (who finished third or fourth in their group). The thing that got me under Kerr was those goals on the edge of the penalty we conceded under Kerr. Israel (both games, including the penalty), Switzerland and France, and Russia in the last campaign. I mean - apart from against the French - we never had a problem with taking the lead. A bit more concentration, discipline and 'fight' would have compensated for the technical limits we have.

I mentioned the techniclly perfect but becaue someone said his teams always played great football. I'm sayingan irish team can't play great football beecaue they can't do simple things like pass, move and control
