Gary Doherty caused the injury. That's what happens when you call up donkeys.

10/10/2005: An ankle injury suffered during training has cast doubt on Shay Given's availability for Wednesday's all-or-nothing World Cup qualifier with Switzerland, it emerged this afternoon.

The Newcastle goalkeeper, who single-handedly kept Ireland in the hunt for a place in Germany with a stunning performance against Cyprus on Saturday, is understood to have sustained the knock in a collision with Gary Doherty.

While the Irish management, and the Irish public in general for that matter, are hopeful Given will be fit to start, Paddy Kenny may be called into action to deputise at Lansdowne Road.

With Roy Keane and Damien Duff already ruled out, manager Brian Kerr can scarcely afford to lose another of the few genuine world-class talents at his disposal with nothing less than a win required in order to keep hopes of qualifying for the World Cup next summer alive.

Caller to Radio 5 phone-in: There are too many foreign players in the league.
Mark Lawrenson: Why do you think that is?
Caller: Because there are a lot of them.
