no thanks give me kavanagh instead of kevin nolan any day
Don't know if anyone else spotted this but the starting line up against cyprus contained 10 players who were born in the Republic, Kilbane being the only British born player.
I've been an advid watcher of where players are born and I'm pretty sure (without checking on the net) that this is the first time in my generation, starting from the Charlton era, that we've had a starting team containing 10 Irish.
McCarthys teams always averaged more Irish than Brits but this is a first for me in all my years watching the Irish team so I was a little chuffed. Still if thats what a virtually all Irish team can do, lets bring on your Trundles and Zat Knights*![]()

And I don't think even the most anti Plastic fans (i.e. me...) can have a problem with Kilbane's Irishness

For what it's worth, according to the Independent at the weekend, the France game was the first time in 30 years Ireland finished with all Irish-born players on the pitch after Harte and Doherty came on for Kilbane and Morrison
agreed about kilbane-he is as irish i think as dave o leary or paul mcgrath-im not one of these people that thinks its necessarilybad having brits in the team-if they really wanna play for us and believe they are irish fair o nuff.
if they're sh ite though they can fu ck off!
if you think back to usa 1994 when we qualified and england didnt-we got some abuse from english media about irish born players-there was 7 in a squad of 22.
and that included ronnie whelan and kevin moran
Yeah the 1-1 at home to portugal had 10 irish born-the away game had breen from the start -english.

We both should have checked more carefullyOriginally Posted by tetsujin1979

this is just a statement of fact , im not too bothered either way,but it is better to see home grown talent coming through as opposed to charltons days-3 or 4 irish born in a starting line up is poor, dont go deserting us Junior, we'll always have a place for you plastics on the team.

ok i should have said english born about Breen. Dads a kerryman i believe

no fear of me deserting. I see it as part of the territory to listen to eejits whilst following Ireland who will never understand the diaspora.Originally Posted by as_i_say
Guys who think 11 Irish born players in the national side is somehow superior to a side that includes 2g etc...

if your born in England but your whole family (both sides including mum, dads grandads, aunts, uncles etc etc) are born in Ireland and you also have an Irish passport...then does that make you Irish?
only if you have a childhood photo of yoy wearing a leprechaun outfit.

When did I say that having 11 Irish born players amounted to a superior team? I didnt. Go kiss the blarney stone. Begorra.
I
I don't care where someone is born ir raised but players such as Morrison & maybe Holland have dubious credentials.
Lets not forget the true Irish man that was Tony Cascarino![]()
matt holland sang "god save the queen" duriong a playoff final.. FACT
he should have never been allowed put on a green shirt again

As a 2g myself, I can only echo Juniors comments on this. Talk of "Brits" is like a red rag to a bull for myself. I think though that 99 % of people on this board do recognise the legitmate Irishness of say Breen and Kilbane. Morrisons and Hollands dubious credentials? PerhapsAs long as they play for the shirt, thats the main thing
