Couldn't figure it out, and rebooting didn't help. I've rebooted the host now, hopefully that'll have killed off whatever was causing the problem.
I can't maintain the site as-is any more, it's blocking me from killing off the server in the CIX data centre, which is costing me €123/month. Migrating from it is way too awkward. There still seems to be about 100 users a day on the site so I'm lax to kill it, so I'm going to bite the bullet and migrate it to vB Cloud for 6 months and see where we stand then. We'll lose some functionality, but it just isn't going to work where it is.
I'm going to bite the bullet and move the site to vB Cloud, and then possibly back again in 6 months if the site is still generating traffic.

It'd be a pity if it had to die after all these years. But the access issues the past few months obviously haven't helped - I think the Ireland section is noticeably quieter even since the outages in Jan; we lost a couple of regular posters about then. The LoI section is still active enough, though still quieter than it was I'd say.
What was the traffic like at the site's peak compared to today, do you know?
Happy to contribute a few euro a month to helping offset costs on yourself Adam. I don't really know how I'd function day to day without checking in on foot.ie.

I'd hate to see the place die too - happy to contribute to easier maintenance and/or better functionality. If there is a core of 50-75 proper users across the two main forums, its a 2-3 bob a month each to cover base. Im sure many would pay e15 a year for this. (is there a way to strip this site to 3 forums - LOI, Ireland and Everything Else - would that be helpful from a maintenance perspective?)
