Wexford paid the price for an uncharacteristically flat performance in Ferrycarrig this evening and ended up with nothing despite having a player advantage for the final half-hour. Wexford started with Paul, James, Josh, Dean, Mikie, Darragh, Dobbsy, Kaylem, Zayd, Ryan K and Ryan B. Wexford had one of their better spells at the start of the game as Dobbsy was set up for a shooting chance but shot over the UCD bar and, on ten minutes, Wexford’s Ryan Kelly put in a nice cross but Mikie Rowe was adjudged to have fouled a UCD defender while trying to apply the finishing touch. After that, however, Wexford seemed to lose their way and it was UCD who looked the more threatening as the half progressed. As the half-hour approached, UCD should have scored when a forward was put through on the Wexford goal but the shot was weakly drilled straight at Paul Martin in the Wexford goal. With a couple of minutes to go in the half, UCD’s Jake Doyle had a free header at the far post but wasn’t able to keep it on target. Paul Martin then had to grab a low shot as the half ended and Wexford needed a stern talk from the manager at halftime. 0-0 at the break.
Wexford played with a bit more coherence at the start of the second period and both Dobbsy and Mikie Rowe had efforts on the UCD goal before, on nine minutes, Mikie Rowe had an effort from Wexford’s right which hit the inside of UCD’s far post but stayed out. Five minutes later, UCD’s McCarthy got a straight red when he pulled back Dobbsy who had a free run in on the UCD goal and UCD were down to ten players. Just after Calum Flynn came on for Wexford, UCD’s Jake Doyle had a free header inside the Wexford six-yard box which he converted and UCD were a goal to the good. With Dobbsy being generally well controlled by UCD’s Clancy and UCD’s Adam Wells doing a similar job on Mikie Rowe, Wexford needed an attacking spark to come from somewhere else but it didn’t happen. Filip Wasilewski and Darragh Dunne then came on for Wexford but UCD’s keeper, Dara Kavanagh, still had only a few routine catches to make. Late header by Mikie Rowe was the nearest that Wexford came to securing an equaliser. 1-0 to UCD at fulltime. Cqrowd was believed to be 405.
