Wexford FC v Longford

Better second half performance enabled Wexford to edge past Longford in what was a tight affair in Ferrycarrig tonight. Wexford made one change from the XI which started against Cobh with Conor Levingston coming in and started with Paul, James, Robbie, Dean, Mikie, Darragh, Calum, Conor, Kaylem, Ryan K and Ryan B. The first half saw little goalmouth action until the end of the half. For the first twenty minutes, it was Longford who showed slightly more endeavour although Paul Martin in the Wexford goal had only a few routine catches to make, including a Franny Campbell effort which had good power but was straight at Martin at a comfortable height. It took Wexford until the twentieth minute to make much of an impression in the final third but then Calum Flynn had two efforts on goal both of which stung the hands of Harry Halwax and won Wexford two corners. Wexford continued to make progress as the half progressed and eventually got their reward a minute before the 45 minutes were up when Ryan Kelly crossed well from the left to set up Calum Flynn with a close-in header. 1-0 to Wexford at halftime.

Longford got an early equaliser in the second period as a cross from Longford’s right was allowed travel a long way across Wexford’s area, and Mohamed Boudiaf was able to head home from beyond Wexford’s far post to make it 1-1. With credit to Wexford, they responded well to conceding the equaliser as the game got a bit stretched and, on 21 minutes, a cross from Wexford’s left was half-blocked by a Longford defender, and the ball popped up nicely to enable Darragh Levingston to head home for 2-1 to Wexford. Wexford continued to have the better of the game at this stage with subs being introduced including Filip Wasilewski, the welcome return of Aaron Dobbs, and Ryan Scanlon. Mikie Rowe then made the game safe for Wexford as his blocked shot eventually came back to him inside the Longford area, and he side-footed it off the right-hand post and in to make it 3-1 to Wexford. A low Longford free which Paul Martin grabbed at full stretch then ended the game with Wexford coming out on top by 3-1. Good performances by a number of Wexford players, including James Crawford, Robbie McCourt, Ryan Butler, Kaylem Harnett and Mikie Rowe. Crowd was believed to be 365.
