Cobh brought a low away support. There are a lot of co finals in Co Longford at the moment which possibly explains the low turnout!
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

I wouldn't be that well up on GAA, how many county finals would there be in Longford?

I was there and honestly thought it was a bit more, was shocked that it didn't even break 500. Really disappointing considering there was actually something on the line. I fear it'll be the same story with crowds next season too

Between hurling, camoige, mens and women's football, from senior down to 13's, possibly 20 county finals. In Galway there's A, B & C championships at a lot of age groups so endless county finals, everyone gets a medal!

There seems to be a small number of people in the Longford area that play sports and only attend games when they are not involved in another sport. That excuse is a bit worn at this stage!

That's a lot of finals, Wikipedia says that Longford has the least GAA clubs (22) in the country, closely and unsurprisingly attended by Sligo which has one more.

There's about 9000 clubs in the smallest county of Louth, seems to be a final for each one of them too. Its a factor but not a total crowd buster for the Drogheda and Dundalk. Id have thought Leitrim would have less clubs, least population and all.

Once upon a time in the winter season we had home gates for some big games of approx 5k ie FAI semi Waterford 2001. The switchover to summer football hasnt worked for us at all!

2003, '04 must have been decent and during a Summer season? I know the standout crowd for me over the years was the cup semi in 2002. There were bigger crowds after but not sure there were many in my time before. Its was a home cup semi final and in a winter season but we won the league in front of 1500 or so in 1994. 1500 became our average gate in the 1st Division after 2002. The only way to really attract more to games is winning, unless you are a bee keeping society like Bohs.

% of population going to games across Europe, LoI is bang on or ahead of trend including Longford...probably as I havent looked up population or average gate.

This always amazes me. Navan has a population of 33,000 approx and has 1 Gaelic team in the town itself

Dundalk and Drogheda have populations in and around 45,000 and Dundalk has 7 GAA clubs in the town and Drogheda has 5 in the town
I played Gaelic myself for many years and most of the lads I go to Oriel with also played Gaelic and it def takes away from the crowd in Oriel when there's GAA fixtures on a Friday night
Also does be plenty of NEFL games on a Friday night with local teams Glenmuir, Rock regularly playing at same time as Dundalk

Im wracking the brain but can only count 6 in the urban area but within 5 miles and it adds 5 more. 39+5 hurling clubs in Louth in total I think. Many run Senior men and women, junior/reserve/almost retired sides, minor and then all the underage stuff. So yeah fo sure if there is a round of games scheduled on Friday nights its knocks numbers off the LoI 2 clubs. I think though there is still enough either or attitude in Louth to limit the impact but that could and probably will change if the county side continues to improve and creates a broader participation. Throw in NEFL, race nights in Dundalk, it does help show why averages can be static enough but can the have big jumps for big games excluding away support and the bandwagon. The attendances at GAA is poor enough still so its near impossible to target the participants for growth, they wont cop out of a game or training to go to Oriel or United Parks.

Athlone is always an impossible stand to guess numbers in as it's so long but I'd say 150-200 Longford fans over tonight

Is it just me, or is it the most dimly lit ground in the league? Its like the floodlights are made of 40 watt bulbs, or maybe that's just how it appears on stream? That for me makes it hard to see who is or isn't in the stand..
