he is only there because of suspensions.
there are two chances of him making his debut in a competitive game. he will feature in the future, but for now he is filler.
Should Farren not be in the NI squad ? and it was Zayed and Farren out in front in goal scoring tableOriginally Posted by fitzknows

This stinks! He's basically the same player but struggled to get into the u21 team when at Cork (even when playing and scoring in Europe) and now a move to the old second division and hey presto he's an international player! It makes me sick! He was good enough before (at least for friendlies) and now that he's moved he just walks into the team![]()

I think Farren is from Donegal.Originally Posted by Roo69

He proved he's capable of playing at a higher level by scoring 3 goals against first division opposition but not by scoring regularly against better sides in Europe for for the Ireland U21s?
Yes. It's a more consistent test. What better opposition did he score regularly against in Europe? Nantes in the Inter Toto? I also reckon his U-21 performances are making up some of the basis for this callup.Originally Posted by Slash/ED

He played more games in Europe for Cork than he has done in the first division, I'm fairly sure of that, it's close anyway.
And didn't he score against Nantes, Malmo and NEC? All better or equal to first divison teams imo.
no way. not a chance unless he is a St PAts player who signed for Shels
EL players will only get their game in Friendlies. Mark Farren is from North Donegal the Inishowen peninsula to be exact and is therefore an SPB like myself and eligible for the Republic![]()

Does this show that some eL players are, at least, near the standard required to be fringe players on the international scene?

It was plain for anybody who wanted to see that Doyle is a special player. It didn't take 3 games with Reading to prove it...
Kerr has just p*ssed on our league again, no matter what anyone says.

In answer to question, don't think Doyle would be in squad if still in EL. Let's face it, putting in what seem to be consistently impressive performances and creating and scoring goals in Championship against pretty handy teams must be rated higher than doing it against Bray or Sligo or Finn Harps (no disrespect to any of these teams - just making a point).
If Doyle hadn't been called up, this forum would have had a line of people saying "What does Doyle have to do to be called up?"
Realistically, there are very very few individuals (if any) in EL good enough for international football. Not sure Doyle is either. He deserves his chance though.
I don't accept that argument. A supporter can judge a player based on what league he plays in and how may goals he scores. I would expect a manager to be able to judge a player by watching him play. The argument is that Doyle is no better a player now after a few games in England that he was a few months ago. I do believe that Doyle being called into the squad so soon after moving to england is an accident of timing but I certainly hope that Brian Kerr regularly watches the players play and doesn't simply judge them on statistics.Originally Posted by Fiddlers Elbow
In the interview I heard with Kerr he was saying that he saw him regularly playing for Cork, and now for Reading. Also mentioned about him playing wider for Cork, but more central now for Reading.
Personally, I think if he'd still been eL he would've been called up, just maybe would've taken a bit longer. But sure we'll never now as the Corkies let him go for a pittance....
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.
First of all, fair play to Doyle, I hope he gets his game. Secondly, did someone mention he was interviewed on Newstalk? I hope he credits Cork and the eL if he does any interviews.
Now, to answer the original question. No, I don't believe he would have been called up if he still played for Cork. Sadly, I think the national team management would be scouring the lower leagues of England and Scotland for somebody with an Irish granny to fill an empty berth on the bench.
Personally, I'd only allow players on the national squad if they had played, or are playing in the eL. So what if we don't qualify for every tournament? We don't do that now anyway. But maybe thats another argument.
There are 2 major reasons which could lead to Doyle being called up:
1. Don Givens is not calling up players to the U-21's who are not eligible for the Euro Champs. This means Doyle is not missing out on competitive U-21 games by being in the senior squad.
2. Morrison is not able to play against Cyprus. Keane, Duff, Elliott and Connolly are all small players. Doc is tall but he's last resort to grab you a header. Doyle is the only fairly big player that is playing up front for his club.
Anyway, no.1 is the main reason. There are 6 strikers in this current squad (Doyle, Keane, Connolly, Elliott, Morrison, Doc). If the U-21's still had a chance of qualifying Doyle would probably not have been called up to the senior squad. He's in for experience, he will not play.
BTW - Kerr had Doyle in the U-20 squad when he was at Pats. Maybe he's just anti-Cork.![]()

Has it anything to do with what league he is playing in, or is it that he has also being scoring for the u21's and with morrison missing was the obvious choice to bring up as a replacement, going on the advise of Given?
In fariness, how is it experience? I'm sure he's been on a plane before *and* sat on the bench before. He's been included because there was an empty space.Originally Posted by eirebhoy
