In isolation it's really not a big deal and could be overlooked as a nothingburger, it's that he has done it repeatedly and often said more that builds a pattern of behavior and not so great comments.

It'd just be nice if he could let it go, and is something that could definitely become a bigger issue if it continued.
But the thing is grammatically it's fine to use they as a pronoun for a single person. Usually it's when the gender is unknown but can also be when the gender is irrelevant or , as is probably the reason Dan uses it frequently and out of habit, when you are trying to protect the identity of someone who has given you information. In this case the gender wasn't relevant, were talking about a men's football team we all know that the person is a male and likely just out of habit Dan said "they". I'm not going to speculate on why it riles Johnny up so much but he should really just drop it. It's pointless nonsense that you'd expect from your drunk uncle at a party when he's had 1 too many. I'd wager we've had more commentary on pronouns than on the goings on at Cork this season which just goes to show how ludicrous it is.
