Ok... two points 1/ Trouble in Brandywell..... Shamrock Rovers have banned 10 named individuals from games because of it.... as we say in Dublin about bleedin' time!

2/ The Irish language. I lived in Canada till I was 9 and only started learning Irish then.
I got honours in the Higher paper in the Leaving.... Why? Partly because I like languages anyway , but I happened to have been blessed by the teachers we had in Primary who experimented with an audio-visual method which they also were trying out to teach French. For the Leaving Cert I had a teacher who hated Peig Sayers as much as any poster here. We did not do her doing Seamus Mac Grianna and Scothscealta. Result very few of the class emerged from school hating Irish.

As regards figures I was working on the last Census for the CSO. 1,000,000 said they were able to speak Irish in the Census. So assuming that they are not all pathological liars, that is far higher than the number of Mandarin, Cantonese and Tagalog speakers living in the country. Gaelscoils are gaining popularity inside the Pale of all places where Irish has not been the spoken language for more than 400 years. Places like Áras Dolcáin in Clondalkin are cropping up in urban centres of Dublin where not only is Irish spoken but traditional music is played and Irish dancing etc are practiced.

I love the language, I think if you take away our language, our music our dancing and Hurling from us we are left with nothing which makes us uniquely us. Not even our historic squabble with our former oppressors is innately Irish ( The Scots, Welsh and French have similar experiences).

So to all you people who say what's the point in learning Irish? I ask you this question what's the point in us being independent?

Comes in very handy if you're abroad with another Irish person and want to have a private conversation with them that no-one else will understand.

Think it's Áras Chrónán or something like that, but it's still going alright.

It's only an idea I picked up from the Rovers forum, where some Rovers fans aren't satisfied with the transparency of the thing.

Why do CliftonVILE supporters follow Rover's? Mini-Celtic and all that baloney? Ironic given the distasteful chants which eminate from the Rover's support every time they come to the Brandy.

Rovers have acknowledged the incident as serious and have taken the relevant steps. Have a look at our message board, no one is making excuses. You claim the supporters are making excuses and the management are taking action - the supporters and management are the same thing!

As for the 'distasteful chants', we've sang those songs at you lot for as long as I can remember. "Thatcher built your floodlights", "You're Brits and you know you are", "We're in the right league, you're not" - we're not serious when we sing it and I'd imagine most of your fans know that. We hardly think you're Brits if in the next breath we're slagging you for taking the traitor Liam Coyle back. It's called a wind-up and it's what fans do to each other.

The only distasteful chant I heard in the Brandywell on Saturday came from your fans who were sitting near to us. I can't even remember what they sang but I found it distasteful that they sat in silence for the entire game until Derry scored and suddenly they were singing and giving us the fingers etc. I don't mind vocal fans giving us abuse but I can't stand this sing when you're winning rubbish. To give Dublin fans credit, our fans are split between singers and non-singers. Go anywhere outside of Dublin and there's a small section of singers and a big section of lads who suddenly turn into hardmen whenever they score. Cork is the worst place for that, Waterford is pretty bad too, but there was a lot of that going on in Derry on Saturday.

Maybe if you had some concept of the **** Derry's gone through, you'd find the above pretty distasteful too. Sadly for a lot of Derry people the british 'influence' on our town will never be a matter for jocularity.

And your lot know that. It's not banter, it's baiting.

Passive, I have to agree with most of what you have said, but find the above statement very silly indeed.

    What constitutes 'becoming a hardman'???

Is it drinking yourself half to death, wearing a Burberry cap, putting a scarf over your face and striking people with a flag pole????

Or is knocking **** out of a fellow drunk outside the ground for no good reason???

Your post was spot on until that point

Don't make me laugh. You refer to "Dublin clubs", with exception to Rover's Dub fans are ****.

I stand with the ex jungle section in the Brandywell but my guess is that the men who goaded you after Derry scored are not "hard men" they were merely geting there own back for the distasteful chanting you refer to.

Yeah i like that bit myself. Personally know three people who've been caught out like that though! There are quite a few emigrants in the US (from back in the 60s and 70s) that came from gaeltachts and still speak Irish.

A few lads I know were in Sicily a couple of years back, in some restaurant down some alleyway. A dark, secretive man walks in and sits down a couple of tables away. Two of the lads didn't see this because their backs were to the door with the way the table was. They obviously couldn't say "Hey, look at the Mafia lad!", but got around it by saying "Hé! Féach on leaid Maifíoch sin!"

right, ill make a deal with you. you stop all references from derry fans in relation to homelessness and milltown, we will stop refereing to the queen and how your floodlights get built!
or you could join 99% of the rest of your support in seeing it for what it is: slagging at a game.
some people really go out of their way to be offended.

It has taken two City fans to explain to you the difference between a stadium and the things endured by the people of Derry. I do not wish to play any sort of victim card but Rover's seem to be a club with quite a republican support so you should be well aware of why we don't like those chants.

    C'mon Speranza!!

The Liam Coyle song they sing is a 'Lyrical masterpiece', the 'You're Brits and you know you are' hurts so much 'Cause it's true and the 'we're in the right League' chant is only relevant for the rest of this season as Rovers may well be in the first division and my reply then would be 'you certainly are in the right league'

So, as much as the above songs irratate the fcuk out of me, I don't take them too much to heart, it's only a game

Fair enough, poor choice of words. I just mean that they sit silently until they score and suddenly they jump to their feet and start giving us the fingers shouting 'Rovers scum'. 'Hardman' is a poor word, but you know what I mean.

I appreciate that they are only getting their own back for the songs we sing, but as I said I don't mind singing fans slagging us for 90 minutes, it's the sing when you're winning crowd that get me.

By the way, this is the most confusing thread ever. It's like sitting in a pub when there's two conversations going on at the same table.
