Tragic news overnight regarding the death of Diogo Jota. Events like this usually tend to galvanise teams - obviously we have Portugal in our group this autumn and this occurrence probably makes it even more likely than before that we're looking at a straight shootout between ourselves and Hungary for second place this time around.
Was thinking the exact same thing when I read the news. It's a really sad story with his brother also in the car.
And only married two weeks ago too.
Obviously him being famous shouldn't change the impact of the story - but it does all the same.
Seems an entirely predictable modern footballer incident - blowing a tyre on his Lamborghini overtaking at night. But life is really harsh at times. Only takes one mistake, and no second chance
Minded of George Baldock being found dead in his pool the day before Greece played England in Wembley - and they went and won.
First thing I thought of was that I'm glad we don't play Portugal next.
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!
It's a shocking tragedy. His poor brother as well.
Can you imagine what the parents are going through right now.
Btw Portugals first home game is the rep of Ireland
Looking at the fixtures again, if we beat Hungary in the opener it could really end up deciding the whole thing. Portugal are going to be on fire for their first couple of games so we could easily come out of the first window with six points to Hungary's zero.
We've had a lot of luck with this draw so similar to my Cork Hurling logic at the moment, we're unlikely to get a chance like this again for a while![]()
