I was talking to a Canadian backpacker in Venice one time and he said he'd just been to Ireland where he visited Cork. As a reflex action (as an Irishman talking to someone about somewhere in Ireland) I said "Oh yeah, it's a nice place". His reaction: "REALLY You think so ".

Unfortunately I had to make a hasty climbdown from my defense of Leeside and reply "Yeah, I'm not really basing that on anything, you're probably right".

Aside from Belfast and obviously Dublin, it is a bit of a stretch to call places like Galway, Cork and Derry a city when that is what London, New York and Tokyo are, while it is ridiculous to call places like Kilkenny a city.
Its a city if it has a city charter. Some people claim is cathedrals but thats a load of rubbish. A place doesn't have to be big to be a city - the Vatican is tiny and its a city.
Kilkenny was the former capital of Ireland and has a charter - therefore it is a city.

The best city in Ireland is definitely Galway imo.

Apologies, I didn't realise Sligo was classified as a city.

In fairness there have been a lot of murders up there this year.

It's alright for a daytrip,I wouldn't like to live there though, too many students and crusty drop out types who could do with a good wash and young lads with tight ben sherman shirts and tight denim jeans hanging around that little square. The only clued in people that are there are the Spanish that have taken over the cafes

Galway is a great place to go IMO.I spend loads of time down there fishing and i couldn't think of a better Irish city.It has it's scummers like everywhere else but when i win the lotto i will be purchasing myself a property down there.Race week is the best week to be there but the Hotels & B&B's take the p1ss with the prices they charge.
I wouldn't class Sligo as a city and it's a good place to go for the weekend.I thought a place could only be classed as a city in Ireland once the population exceeded 60,000 but i stand to be corrected.

Hate: Dublin, Birmingham(unquestionably the greatest hole on the planet) and Los Angeles.

That's not a judgement on those places, Galway is the best place in Ireland IMO, as for Cork I personally don't see anything appealing about the place but I don't see anything negative about it either, while Derry is rather dull. And who considers Sligo to be a city!!!

As for Dublin being a least-favourite city, good call. It has developped into what seems to be just another "British" city. No different than the medium sized cities through out Britain, high crime etc and not the cleanest of places.
I suppose it's a bit of a stretch to describe Cork or Derry as towns either.
The whole issue of city and city populations is a real mess in Ireland. Dublin has 3 Local Authorities for the one city so Dublin City Council only has an official pop of 500,000, Waterford City Council only has a pop of 45,000 eventhough the real pop is more like 60,000, Limerick is just above 50,000 yet the real pop is around 90,000, Cork City is officially only 125,000 though around 250,000 live in the city and suburbs this increases to 300,000 if you include Midleton and Cobh. Only Galways pop really reflects the actual city pop as the City Council massively extended the citys boundary before the 90's boom.
In all the above cities there are attempts to increase the city boundaries. I think in Waterford on Saturday there is going to be a demo with all the people living in the "KIllKenny" suburbs of Waterford demonstrating about Waterford City Council wanting to annex them. Hillarious stuff really. In limerick you have the same problem and in Cork you have some of the county councillors calling for the city to back off "from their patch". The worst type of gombeen politics which is really affecting proper strategic planning for these areas.

    Anyway Back on topic
