    Red Bull Salzburg Franchise

Maybe this has been covered before but
I just see(i know im a bit slow) that Austria Salzburg has sold its soul
and is now RED BULL Salzburg.Apparently they have changed there Name
Crest and Jersey Colours a presumably the stadium name. The fans did try
wear the old jersey to games but were refused entry.Just wondering if anyone knows how the fans reacted?or if there is protests planned?
I think this is very relevant to Eircom league because no one has a pot
to **** in.And if the money was right
We could end up with Carslberg Cork City,Durex Derry City and Shell Shelbourne playing in the Kellogs Cornflakes stadium
Would EL fans care? or would the money talk in the end?

it would be typical of Ollie to team up with the jailkeepers of the Rossport 5!

The recent take-over of Austria Salzburg SV, by the energy drink giant Red Bull, has begun for Salzburgs football fans, the virtual nightmare.

    * The Clubs Colours were immediately changed from VIOLET/WHITE to Blue / White / Red

    * The Clubs Name and coat of arms changed.

    * The Clubs historical identity, it's foundation year, was changed from 1933to 2005, (only to be reinstated by the Austrian football league)

    * Loyal fans, that have been the backbone of Austria Salzburg's recent Premiership survival, and there past success are now no longer wanted at the Stadium. The new concern is attempting to replace them with a yuppie style Fan base, that relates more to the owners branding than to the football club itself!

    * THE REALITY!
Our end, has been (without consultation of the fan base), cut in half, thus to allow more seats. Our Stadium is one of the few stadiums, if not the only, in Europe where the home fan end is smaller than the away end!!! We are expecting more provocation from the new owners, in an attempt to eradicate the old memories of Austria Salzburg.

*Red Bull distributed violet plastic glasses in our end, at the first home game of the season, with the motto, 'SEE THE FUTURE'. This clearly provocative gesture toward fans, who choose to continue to wear the colours, that represent Salzburg football, was disappointing.

We therefore seek international solidarity, as takeovers like this, are increasing. It happens quicker than you think!

As a next step, we would ask Europe to voice their disapprovals at the take-over of Austria Salzburg, with a weekend Protest against Red Bull. This senseless lack of understanding of the traditions of Salzburg’s football needs to be clearly demonstrated.

Find out about the demonstration at www.tgs92.com/tradition ++ www.ultras.at/tradition

A loud and clear response needs to echo to Red Bull, about this absurd new era of Salzburg football.

and the cause has even surfaced at a Valerenga game in Norway:

The difference with PSV though is that they've been phillips for their entire existence. Sort of like a factory team. Very different to someone coming in and basically rebranding a team.

I believe (but open to correction) that Bayer Leverkusen are similar in that they are linked with a local company.

    Reiteoir

Thanks for that REITEOIR! absolutely horrendous stuff.
The worrying thing is it wouldnt take an awful lot of lolly to do the same
in the eircom league. How the hell did there FA let them away it. Where was
UEFA or FIFA?There is only one thing for them to do thats start a boycott
of Red Bull in Austria!I would also urge all football fans to do the same
Put coke in your vodka in future!

Ehhh - I think you'll find that the Bayern in Bayern Munich is the name of the Federal State in which Munich is located - known as Bavaria in English.

But in general this is a major problem that we are going to face soon enough. Just look at Wales "they'll be dancing in the valleys of Total Netwrok Solutions tonight"....

    A few suggestions:

    1. Burberry Rovers - for the man with sophisticated taste in baseball caps
    2. Triple A Longford Mavericks - park the cattle in our specially designed sheds while we bore you death on the pitch
    3. Liverpool Bohemians (a buy-out) - you don't have to have a tash or drive a taxi to folllow our club, but it helps
    4. Speedo Wandereers - I do like to watch me football beside the seaside (although the Carlisle is more like Vladisvostok than Valencia)
    5. Shelbourne Woodbines - no explanation needed

    Any other ideas?

Names are queer - outisde of Dublin no club has a name that does not reflect the geographic area, the bit at the end can change, but the reference to the area stays the same. In Dublin though Shamrock Rovers, Bohs and St Pats don't directly relate to a geographic area and Shelourne are a long way from, err, Shelbourne, and even thats strecthcing it. If a club here was offered mad money I'm sure they'd give up the additional moniker if they could keep the place name.

If your club is up for sale then there's nothing to stop investors coming in and taking over in this manner. If the Glazers wanted to change Man Utd's name to the Manchester Vodafone Devils or some other name, then there's nothing to stop them. The sad fact of the matter is that football is no longer a club game, it is a business. There are still remmnants that are run as clubs, and subscribe to legislation governing clubs (eg junior league, golf clubs, athletics clubs etc.) but most "clubs" these days are companies, either Ltd. or PLCs, and hence are governed by rules regarding companies. Fans are no longer considered as fans by the boards of clubs, they are considered as customers, albeit who have a strong brand loyalty. When it comes to big clubs like Utd. for example, they have enough "fans" to fill out every game, therefore they would be happier with a new fan in Singapore who will buy as much Utd branded paraphenalia as possible than with a new fan living across the road from Old Trafford who will go to games. Listen to the chief executives of clubs talk about "opening up new markets" in the Far East. That's what fans are - a market. This Red Bull guy obviously feels that he can expand the business by aiming for a different market.

Would people complain as much if their local pub was turned into a wine bar and bistro to aim for a yuppie crowd? To non football fans and to businessmen, the two situations are exactly the same. For fans the question now is why do we continue to support "clubs" that will jerk us around, take our money, give us nothing back and then expect us to live or die by how successful the business is? Sooner or later the backlash will hit football. If you turn a club into a money-first business, then don't be surprised when your customers start looking for more satisfying entertainment.

To pick an example that a lot of people can relate to on the board (i think), how many people here would rather Ireland qualify for the World Cup than your EL team win a trophy? Not many, because "Team Ireland" with all its hangers-on, and highly paid employees, no longer represents football in Ireland. Those who stand in the freezing rain in Flancare Park, or take a day off work to travel to watch their team play out a nil nil draw in Ballybofey, or those who tog out from a car boot in the snow in January to play a 3B league match are the people who epitomise football in Ireland.

For the Salzburg fans in Austria, if Red Bull is killing the team, then pay your last respects and move on. Reclaim your team, even if you have to start right at the bottom. Wimbledon did it in London and I for one would rather watch my team play at a lower level than pay for the club to be turned into a glorified cinema.

Must be quite a few teams like that around - Junior league club Waterford Crystal for example.

There was a banner of support for the Salzberg lads at the Shels vs. Waterford game. The only way to stop stuff like this happening is to make sure that Red Bull's experiment is a complete disaster.

    Come on lads,

You surely know the score with "offensive" banners at this stage. The FAI have been getting grief from the Red Bull lads since.

Fans organised dissention? Down with that sort of thing
Tifo poles, sausage rolls and a few goals.

Anyone remember the FAI stewards removing any piece of red paper from fabns going to Landsdowne only a few months back?

I would suggest a protest banner about the League and FAI taking down protest banners, but I suppose they's clamp dwon on that too....
