n.JOE.. I WAS NOT GETTING AT THE REF'S BUT SOME OF THEM TREAT THE PLAYERS LIKE LITTLE CHILDREN, BACK WHEN I PLAYED (BADLY AND A LONG TIME AGO) THE REFS AKA. T.POWER,G.FITZ,F.HOFFLER,J.HARTIGAN,P.COLLINS AND LATER WINDLE WERE RESPECTED BECAUSE THEY SHOWED RESPECT.IT WAS A TWO WAY STREET. NOW YOU PAY THEM A GOOD WAGE AND THEY LOOK DOWN AT CLUBS AND PLAYERS. IS THIS SOMETHING THAT THEY ARE TAUGHT AT REF COURSES? THE MODERN GROUP ARE LIKE A BUNCH OF SPOILT BULLIES. Apologies for the caps.....not retyping now......no clues for the 2nd player...

Agree with you leather, the words power and trip come to mind. They seem more interested in getting as many poorly reffed games in the weekend to fatten the wallet instead of reffing a few games properly and doing a quality job. For the second player just answer this with a yes or a no. Has he come from a different league?

You may be right, i dont ref anymore as i said so i dont know about the current ref lack of respect or whatever it is perceived to be towards players. But as you said it is a two way system. The players get onto referees backs straight away and to be honest they are stupid for doing so as it makes it worse for themselves invariably. I believe that perhaps the lack of role-models doesnt help in the premiership e.g Roy Keane, P Di Canio, Diouf, the blackburn team! What you think of rugby example?

shannon69----answer is no... N.joe-------- rugby is a excel eample of respect both ways.. the irb have suspended that knob ref from NZ for giving players crap..on the field. shane horgan on the lions tour was one example where he abused the player...could you ever see the football authorities doing that...........

the ref's bring a lot of the abuse onto themselves. they make mistakes and will not admit it.
Then they aboue players , by telling them to **** off and all that. you do the same back as a player and all hell breaks loose.
They are getting paid too much to put in **** performances each week.

This year 1 ref said before the game to a manager i hope you put ina better performance that the last 2 games and the manager said he could say the same back. A dodgy penalty was given and after the game the manager was giving the ref his money and said, you had a bad game out there today. The ref claimed that he was being abused.

OK so we are all in agreement that the referees are bad, incompetent, most of all inconsistent! That drives managers, supporters, players etc mad So does anyone have any suggestions of a way forward? I would like if refs were made more accountable myself. If a ref has a bad game thats the end of it, if a player has a bad game he is dropped! Should there be a system for refs to be marked on a game out of 10 say...
In relation to the Fairview team what about the rest of that minor team? They had a big squad that year of 15 or 16 and only Rosi is left i would say. Why are the rest not there anymore?

Sounds great in theory Jo but in reality theres a shortage of refs in nearly every league with the LDMC being no exception. If refs were to be suspended or dropped for a week then theyd just go on strike and the entire league would suffer. Its a tricky one but I do agree that something has to be done especially at the top level games. Saw a ref doing an Interfirm game last year threatening to blow the game up with 15 mins to go and giving the win to the team leading 1-0 just because he could "do whatever he wanted to" and was getting some stick for having a really bad game. Now thats just not on

My whole point is that someone said on the thread that ref numbers are dropping. Therefore, what are the options for the future, how many young referees are there coming through? Could it be the case say in 10/15 years that there will be none left? Or does nobody care? After all ther are a vital clog in the wheel! I am trying to establish why the numbers are diminishing so drastically? I personally dont care as i dont play or ref anymore. Just offering some advice.....

IMO players have to start understanding that refs do make mistakes, but when a ref makes an obvious mistake then he should just admit the mistake and change the decision. Too many refs make too many rash decisions, instead they should just take their time when making a decision thats what the advantage rule is there for. Your always going to get crowds and managers shouting at refs, thats never going to change.

I was playing a match about 2 years ago where I was calling for offside, called for it three times and was eventually given the free out, and a nice yellow card for calling so "viciferously" for it. Go figure.

Either way one team 'coincidentally the team that doesnt win' will blame the ref.. I just think that there is a lack of respect between the two parties (refs + players) Is there any way that the relaationship could be buils up.? Maybe a meeting once a month with club captains or officials for feedback and just to build up a rapport?

ah my old friend joe..how are kepping?its saying a lot for the bunch we have at the moment that you're running their training and fitness sessions at your mature age.but, fair play-you're a credit to the rest of us.

by the way, what has happened to your local team (with the manholes on their pitch-you know-at the greenhills).they had a fine side a few years back?

ps:i had to have a go at your name..i mean you wern't very NEUTRAL to us in a famous community games final years back in Ballysheedy when you allowed a goal to stand after our keeper was slide-tackled into the net with the ball in his arms..luckily,there was a happy ending as we won on penalties and you went home with a nice match fee!!!
