New statue going up in Trafalgar Sqaure On Thursday

It's of a naked pregnant artist with no arms and shot legs called Alison Lapper.....read an article about it today.
It's going to be there for 18 months.
I personally love Trafalgar Square...the St. Patricks day there, spending the night the on the make Povert History Vigil etc. but this really doesn't seem to fit in with the scene
Any views?

Thought you'd support the statue. After all it's a two fingers up to the destruction of human life through abortion, just because the baby doesn't confirm to society's view of the perfect body.

Noone gave this woman - Alison Lapper - a hope when she was born and she was taken away from her mother because of her disfigurement and 'ugliness' - the latter of which she is nothing of the sort now. She has managed to go on to university, get married (and divorced), and has a very good looking - and perfectly healthy - son. The only thing that makes it look out of place IMO is that Trafalgar Square celebrates imperialism, jingoism and intolerence, while this does the complete opposite. Certainly get's my vote.

she was described as a |monster|by doctors for gods sake, her mother wasnt allowed near her for over a month, so what was her mother expecting, she was made to play with other children like her.

Fair play to ya Lopez. Like I was pointing out in my first post I didn't really know much about it...yourself agreed it is out of place in Traflgar Sqaure (though I don't realyl agree with what you say the sqaure represents but I certainly didn't say I was against it. I realyl didn't know enough to judge-i'd never heard of the lady before now. Fair play and thanks for elightening me on some interesting points and the meaning of the statue/sculpture.

My friends and I have been talking about it for ages,but never actualy thought it would go ahead.The lads are all really excited about it.i e-mailed my mate in Figi and he said he will go with us aswell.Such a bit of craic it will be.

No it won't cost ya a penny Nice place to have a walk round and some lunch by the fountains. Some nice shops round there then ya can head up the road to Parliament and spit on Cromwell's statue

Seriously I think i'll go have a look myself. Now that Lopez has told me all about it i'm realyl quite interested. I hope you have a good time mate-tell me what it's like yeah?

I'm going to try and head up to Green Park for a protest otuside the burmese embassy on Monday so might pop round and have a looka fter that.

Actually, the woman looked very familiar. I think I first saw her on a biology type documentary with that professor with the curly black hair and moustache who studies human behaviour and growth. He made a documentary series about a group of children and how they reacted to things at different ages and this woman was ont he prog i think with her wee boy, who was 5 and he was so cute. He was getting frustrated though at the amount of childminders coming and going in his life, he was not settled at all.

Very interesting prog.
