I don't think anyone would choose to be a crank 24/7 so you'd have to feel sorry for him.![]()

They used to call him Samson at Spurs... he lost all his skill and strength when he shaved his head.
He used to be one of our best players but has been very average for us for around 4-5 years now.
Its a sad farce to be passing judgements based on rumors/heresay and on how a player looks on the field. Its his standard of play which is the question. With the drop in his standard of play I wouldn't be expecting him to be cracking jokes about penalty misses with Shay Given. It is a curious move by Staunton to get him back and as he keeps saying that he is not daft, maybe behind the grim reaper facade there lurks a sound option as a substitute.
ok if he was brought back as cover then fair enough but if he gets in the first team ahead of finnan ill burn my staunton doll. maybe some humility on the bench might sort him out./ also he should definitely grow his hair back.

Who knows maybe if the new managment are so influential that they can convince Carr to come back possibly they could also convince John O'Shea to retire.
Then we might start going places.
I can't comment on the guys personality and it’s really does not matter, but for the life of me I don't know why Staunton want him back. The man is finished pure and simple.
the lad might be a moany ****** but is a quality player ... if he gets a good run of games free from injuries will be delighted to have him back .. We dont have a huge pool and why people are gunning for kelly who isnt a regular for spurs is beyond me ...
hope the lad does well for us but worrying he cant get in ahead of stalteri for spurs ..Originally Posted by Tuff Paddy
I think begging Carr to come back gives the wrong message to Finnan, who is one of the most consistent and in-form Irish players at the moment (and has been for a while).
I'm all for having Carr as cover should we be stuck some time, but if he's going to come back with a "I didn't come out of retirement to sit on the bench" attitude then I don't believe it helps our cause at all.
We'll wait and see...

Who said Staunton "begged" Carr to come back? The more players we have available the better. It doesn't mean they have to be picked.
carr is a spent force, upon that there can be little doubt. however i do not think finnan is the answer either. sure he just might have cost liverpool a place in the last 8 of the chamions league after loosing his man for the goal last night. shocking defending and benitez looked to be fairly annoyed with him over it too. i wouldn't be surprised if he finds himself on the sidelines for a while after that.
Either you just don't rate Finnan and are looking for petty reasons to slate him or you got him mistaken with someone else last night. Finnan's 'man' never even entered the box for that freekick. That was an absolutely fabulous training ground set piece. The goalscorer ran from the wall into the box and nobody was marking him. Finnan was the only player to react and chase him.Originally Posted by Rover 2 U

Come on man, surely Finnan has become one of the best full backs in the English game? Certainly the best Irish full back since Denis Irwin?Originally Posted by Rover 2 U
I don't think it has to a case of Carr and Finnan vying for the same position ie RB. Those who have followed Finnans career will remember that he was a striker or attacking midfielder at Notts County and early in his Fulham days under Paul Bracewell. Kevin Keegan often played him as a left wing-back when he took over at Craven cottage and it was only when Jean Tigana became manager that he got pigeon-holed at right-back. I think Finnan is well capable of playing of playing at left-full or right midfield and doing a good job for us.
While Finnan was at Fulham I always though of him as an Irwin type player that could play just as good at left or right back. I think he played a large part of a season at left back for Fulham but not 100%. We have 3 right back's (Carr, Kelly, Finnan) and 1 left back in Ian Harte. Harte is playing in the Spanish 2nd division which would be on par with the Eircom league so I'd either give Finnan a shot at left back or give someone like Danny Murphy a go.
Actually, for those that are calling for more Eircom league players in the squads. With O'Shea's days at left back over at Man Utd (and most likely over full stop) Ian Harte is the only left back in the current squad so someone is needed.

I've always thought Finnan was a quality player. I think eirebhoy's right - he did have a prolonged spell at left back one year at Fulham. I also saw him play RHM for Fulham vs Arsenal, and he had Ashley Cole in his pocket all day.
World class? Well, of the teams that are fancied for the World Cup I'd imagine Finnan would have a shot at getting in all of them. Terrible shame his European Cup Final didn't work out for him. I remember being livid that Traore got to stay on the pitch over Finnan, only reading later that Finnan had got injured.
