He is clearly a 1st choice for his club and the outstanding first choice for Ireland. But wouldn't real recognition be a 10 page thread of his own of foot.ie? Do we hate more than we love

i never thought i'd see the words 'dynamic' and 'carr' in the same sentence

carr was brilliant about six years ago, but that was a long time ago

How about: The dynamic Steve Finnan is the outstanding first choice at lb for his country, well ahead of the ageing veteran Stephen Carr.

Good spot Stuttgart88.Read it myself the other day, and while Eboue is an excellent prospect,it re-iterates how good Finnan is. The only reason I think Chimbonda got into the team of the year is because he was an unknown who come from Bastia and turned out to have an excellent season. Finnan was his usual, and is slightly similar to Dennis Irwin in the way he never looked for the spotlight in the media and just got on with things , in a reliable and steady manor.

    Carr Announces Retirement
Former Newcastle United defender Stephen Carr has announced his retirement from football.

The 32-year-old, who also played for Tottenham Hotspur, has decided to hang up his boots after failing to find himself a new club.

Carr has been without a side since leaving Newcastle at the end of last season and he has been linked with a number of outfits.

However, the ex-Republic of Ireland international has been unable to find a new club and he has now opted to quit the game.

Carr won 44 caps with the Republic and made over 300 first-team appearances for Tottenham and Newcastle.
Farewell Stephen. Most of his best performances were for his clubs rather than his country but he was a good player and had a good career. Gluck Stevie

Stephen Carrs career at his highest level ended about six years ago.It must be very frustrating never to reach the same level again and to have to put up with morons critising you and not being able to comprehend that it was injury that severely curtailed your career at the highest level.

Yes, potentially one of our best full backs ever but when nearing his peak we were also well covered in that position but was struck down by serious injuries just when we needed him most.

Has Carr expressed an interest in playing for us again or is he happy to see out his playing days away from the international scene? A very good player in his day and great to see him back.

I think he'd have something to offer the team right now. JOS could move left back, or even back into the middle where I still prefer him to SSL, promising and all as his early showings have been.

With Finnan injured, he does have something to offer the team. However Trapattoni should have given both Kelly and Foley more game time (both specialists in that position) - in preference for McShane. His decision to move JOSH to the right and to bring St Ledger in has made us vulnerable at both right full and in the centre. Least we forget we were rock solid in the centre with the JOSH/Dunne partnership - can the same be said about the St. Ledger/Dunne partnership? I think St. Ledger is too slow and positional weak to be a starter for us, JOSH has failed to impress since moving to the right.

But has Carr expressed an interest in returning? If he hasn't then I suppose it's irrelevant like Stephen Ireland (although I am not comparing the attitude of the two).

    Stephen Carr

Liam Brady's the man for that. He asked Dean Kiely back and couldn't keep his promise.

Don't shoot the messenger but if awards were picked on merit rather than big club/reputation bias this guy would be in the premier league team of the season so far. His performances for Birmingham really have been excellent, I've seen many of them, albeit on TV.

He's going 34 this year. There's no point in bringing him back at this stage IMO.

hed be good against the lesser teams like andorra and armenia when we need more of an emphasis on attacking, something he is a lot better than o shea at.
    id say call him up.
at the moment , along with dunne, he is the only irish defender that has been playing regularly in a top 10 team this year.

Michael Ballack is 33 but he is still Germany's main man. He'll probably be in the Germany squad for a while yet, as long as he is performing well. Carr could be an option for us in the qualifying if he's still playing regularly, although hasn't he been retired from international football for a while now? Maybe he wouldn't answer the call.
