What difference would it make if they're are 500 away fans or 1000, as they don't go past them on the way out anyway

It sounds to me that Duff wants less away fans in the ground, as he sees it a benefit to his side (not working out too well)

It wasn’t even open for them in the end. They didn’t have enough fans there tonight to need to open it. Also empty spots in the main stand too.

They opened the Ballybough exit for the home fans, beside the closed end of the away terrace. Since shels are back in the premier, the first 5 games vs pats in Tolka have had that exit closed and had a full away end, with home fans on the riverside leaving the ground at the exit closer to Drumcondra. I don’t see the reason why that had to change at all

It looks like Shelbourne are stuck at a home average of around 4,000 even on a Monday night which is great. But being league leaders for most of the season and possibly winners, I would have expected Shels to attract bigger attendances.

They have made great improvements at Tolka Park even with all its faults. The ground always looks clean and generates a great atmosphere. While the improvements in the facilities is welcome, Shels don't seem to have attracted the extra numbers. The Riverside stand looks great in the centre with the main chorus of supporters but the improved terracing either side has not helped to attract any extra fans.

Maybe if they could get the Drumcondra End stand back up open with seats might help!

With the capacity increased, closer to 6,000, I would have expected Shels to be pushing to the 5,000+ average especially with all the local Dublin derby fixtures and Shels challenging for the league title!

Any reason why Shels struggle to attract more fans!

Are you mental? This is the highest Shels support I've seen in 25 or 30 years watching LOI. They never had support like this when they were winning titles in the 00's.

It’s some rise on the average of just 496 people a week as recently as 2017

I'm with Nigel on this one. Looking at the trajectory of support for Pats and Bohs, Shels were a few seasons behind them but had very impressive crowds last season, and didnt suffer a second season slump after promotion that happens most promoted sides. This season that has grown again, and no doubt the season they are having has helped but wouldnt Ollie Byrne loved to have had 4000 coming to Tolka every single home game when Shels were winning titles!

21 games left in Premier I think. If we keep average as is might just pass last years 592k in premier. Would need another 82k, or close to 4k average for the 21 games, to hit the 600k at games. Would need Rovers to have at least one 8 or 9k attendance to achieve that

115k to match last years overall. Cant see that happening now with first division at best 20k over the remaining 20 games.

I'd say with a degree of certainty we're going to be down on last season.

First Division has taken a fairly sizeable dip, which can't be attributed to Galway and Waterford, as everyone else bar Treaty have suffered a dip in average attendance from 2023.

The Dublin clubs have largely kept up their high attendances, but the rest of the country have a fair bit of improving to do yet.

Derry pushing for a league title and being well below a limited capacity in a fairly large city by Irish standards, Galway pushing for Europe and only at 2.8k in one of their best seasons in decades. Others have room for improvement too, but the big rise in attendances are still largely confined to Dublin.

I think there are lessons to be learned for other clubs on what Dublin clubs have been doing and SLigo.
While at the same time, for a city of 1.3m its still a small %, 10 to 12k going to matches each week from the capital, 1% or so of population.

Derry with 100k getting 3%, Sligo do best on that metric, even taking the county at 70k or so, and just 20k in the town, so using same metric they get over 10% of population of the town going to games.

I was in Tolka last night, great ground to watch a game when it is nearly full. I was also surprised that Shels couldn't fill the terracing on the Riverside Stand and their was a good few empty seat around me in the main stand, behind the away dugout.
Couple reasons maybe: game live on tv and difficulty with parking in Drumcondra (I have been surprised how few use the bus/train to get to the ground).
Price of 21e (16e student) I felt was a bit expensive.
The re-opening of the newish Drumcondra end stand could really add to the matchday experience as been mentioned above.

When is that due to reopen Wonder88?
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

It isn’t. I believe the foundations were found to be gammy and the stand can’t support the weight of a crowd on it (though scaffolding for a TV crew on it was deemed fine last night lol). I’d imagine it’ll be costly enough to resolve

What were Shels average attendances at Tolka during the Ollie Byrne era?

Exactly. Even back in the 2000's when they were riding high, they often had crowds of 1,500 or less IIRC.

At a guess, and relying on dodgy memory, I'd say they maxed out in the 1,500-2,000 region.

Thoiugh they reached quite a few cup finals in the 90s and 00s with attendances of 10-15,000 (obviously not all Shels).

Well the thing about crowds is they aren't static. A game like Monday's would have had a huge amount of bouncing around with the amount of goals and controversial decisions. The weight of the scaffold and the few TV crew probably pales in comparison to the force of a few hundred people jumping up and down.

Is it true the Gardaí will not allow the Riverside Stand to be full to its maximum current safe capacity of about 3,000, especially at the upgraded terraced side near the Ballybough end?
