Regards to why the town itself is struggling so badly, a quick Google of Longford will turn up any number of news articles and viral videos of serious incidents of disorder in the town, many in broad daylight.

There have been a number of long running family fueds that have spiraled to the point where there have been full brawls with weapons in the middle of the main street in the early afternoon.

I know my own. mother doesn't be that mad about going into the town to shop and certainly plenty of older people feel the same. Even when I'm down home the very odd time aside from matches I'd have little to no interest in going out for a few pints because I find the town very rough, there's very few decent boozers in it and above all else it's absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to get a taxi home. I know this is something local councilors have raised as I believe Longford was in line to be selected as one of the towns in the pilot scheme for extended opening nightlife hours.

The fact it's paid parking absolutely everywhere is also a huge deterrent for local shoppers, Roscommon who have free street parking appear to be thriving in contrast.

As for comments about relationships with local leagues and clubs, the club have an active partnership with Melview who are the leading schoolboy club who have produced Aodh Dervin and James Abankwah among others but as someone who played, refereed and coached locally I know for a fact there are clubs who will not allow their players to trial for LTFC. There's a distain for the club in certain quarters of the schoolboy ranks, how we fix that I don't know.

As I said on my podcast earlier this week, I would be in favor of scaling back on the playing budget over the next 4-5 years even if it means grim seasons like this in order to build the club off the pitch. We need full time club staff, especially a community officer. I think Acornvilla has said similar above but for me that's the only way we can grow the club.

Sorry to be taking this away from football talk but..

I agree taxi’s are in short supply and this needs to be improved on.
Personally, I disagree with you and don’t find the town “very rough” as you state. The perception of the optics is far removed from the actual truth in a lot of instances.
The supermarkets in and around town - many with their own free parking (apart from Tesco) still seem to be thriving with a lot of footfall.

There’s no doubt there’s issues and challenges in Longford. But a lot of these can be seen in many towns across the country.

There’s nice places to eat, plenty of coffee shops and a wonderful public park in town. But it’s all too easy at times to spout negativity.

It's also interesting that LTFC's struggles are coinciding with a real barren patch for the County GAA team. Stuck in division 4 and some dreadful results in the championship, if we're struggling to build a competitive team with players from all over imagine the struggles of selecting players only from Longford as many people wildly suggest LTFC should do (A county that btw only has I think 3 senior hurling club sides). Not easy for any of the sporting codes given the population, demographics and lack of investment.

Didn't hear it announced but looked maybe around 6000. East stand was open and south rammed full.

6,153 it was. Bit of an odd one that, one of the biggest games in the clubs history and it drew a smaller crowd than the 9,684 that were at the Sparta Prague game. I know that one was in the CL and Sparta are a bigger name than Celje but it’s still a surprise

It was certainly a lower attendance than we had hoped, but with a guaranteed 4 Home games( 1 Vs Paok + 3 for Conference or 4 for Europa) the hope is that there'll be higher attendances for those games- It's mad to think that the revenue generated around these games amounts to more per game than the prizemoney for winning the domestic league..
Hopefully keeping the PAOK tie alive next Thursday will result in 8/9k bums on seats for the return fixture.
TV revenue is the only financial game in town when it comes to football irrespective of the location of the league location.

There is a risk of having games on free to air TV in relation to attendance, that game would have been under 5k last night if it was on rte2.
A lot of folks in the GAA do not get this either. County boards have recently started streaming their 2024 championships and its a big money spinner for many of them despite the uproar about GAAGo earlier this summer (before euro and local elections).

I think 1545 was the crowd announced at RSC the other night with around 20 Athlone fans there.

Out of curiosity said I’d go to see the local Limerick derby , shows the gulf between junior and senior soccer , some decent old school football fans but a lot of dangerous limerick city criminals in attendance which wouldn’t do much for many people.maybe they were there over Pike , I’ll go to home quarter final if there is one and hope there’s a better vibe .

Did Pike have a good support amongst that attendance and would they have attracted any support from other junior clubs as they were representing that association!

Some good attendances in the Cup, considering the crowds are usually less than the league. Sligo had over 1,800 for UCD on a Saturday night, Cork had over 3,000 & Waterford over 1,500 for Athlone. I reckon all these Premier clubs were expecting less. But how can league leaders Shels average near 4,000 in the league and than only get 1,600+ for Galway a Premier side!

Wouldn't say Pike brought a big support, more that the two teams captured the attention of the Limerick footballing fraternity.

Willie O'Dea was in attendance but I can't confirm if he was searched upon entry.

Are you for real? What sort of evidence are you expecting from him?
