Ireland were the first country to play Chile after the 1973 fascist coup in the country - playing in a football stadium where the fascist forces tortured and massacred thousands of supporters of the democratically elected government of Allende. But read the history of the FAI on their website - they mention the match but nothing about the coup - the massacre - or the fact that every other country who had been invited to play for a nine months after the coup refused to go. Dunphy later commented that when the players got to Santiago it was clear to them that they were being used by the dictatorship for political purposes.
