Galway Utd were refused planning permission for a training ground and hockey centre of excellence on a 30 acre site which had previously been granted permission to be a Galway GAA training base. Currently using Drom, owned by Salthill Devon and Dangan owned by the University. Plans are in place for a high performance gym in an industrial estate in the city.
Yes their pitches are grass, the changing rooms are containers and there are no lights so training is an issue especially for kids, also their pitches probably fall way short of the criteria required for LSL so this would effect the seniors.Originally Posted by Philosophizer
St. John Vianney & Kilmore Celtic have had a long running campaign seeking upgrades to their existing facilities and it is completely understandable that they would use any avenue available to them to continue to pressure DCC into providing facilities for the kids of the area. Best of luck to them.
Though a pair of twitter windup merchants (vocal fans of other Dublin LOI clubs) and a poster here have gone down a different route with this topic (other club bad lol!), there is nonethless something very important in this story - what is happening with the NDSL? The... questions... are piling up.
That seems the real issue here. The clubs themselves and local government got themselves to a point where they don’t have adequate facilities. In fairness, that area has always been underprivileged in regards to facilities. Wasn’t it only a few years ago there was uproar because a private south Dublin school was getting public funding for a 4th hockey pitch or something while a school in Coolock had no sports facilities for decades and was crying out for funding.
It all goes back to the FAIs statement that we need hundreds of millions invested in order to just bring local facilities around the country up to minimum required.
What is the proximty, overlap, catchement of the playing pitches and the questionable model of social and affordable housing development planned in the vicinity. Firstly are playing pitches, formal or otherwise to be lost - eg in Dundalk council owned land evolved in to some urban pitches over time, not very stable with clubs coming and going over the years, often based at such areas and as access get restricted. No particular reason for this really question beyond curiosity and that decisions are made now either way.
As part of the overall area development plan are there inclusions for sporting facilities ie retention of football pitches and the development of wider associated infrastructure. This would be one time i'd get impatiet with 'multi-use' provisions mainly as the term could be used to fudge doing anything adaquate for any sport, there is also the historical connection to football and I am biased to one sport due to the major catchup in investment thats required compared to other codes. I'd hope that those containers mentioned couldnt hold the submissions from clubs and community as part of the development plan. Bohs could have played a blinder getting their stake in in this prime location with a damn big new community to be rooted in. How long is a 'long running campaign' from other clubs? Sadly its impossible to accomodate everyone but there is obvious opportunity for partnerships and dare I say mergers if egos at grassrot levels can be overcome.
We all know that there is a chronic shortage of playing fields for all sports and as alluded to above, the ones really suffering are those that didnt gain ownership or long terms leases at all never mind in their area...nationwaide. Local Authorities here dont give over landbanks to sport for nothing and they detest large multi-pitch municipal facilities due to the long term unpredictable upkeep cost and tbh that has a lot to do with litigation and insurance issues on 'unsecured' sites - the damned if you do (and fence things in or people out) and damed if you dont bother because of cost - we all good with a couple of % on property taxes to cover things etc... Whole lot of social issues could be teased out on this.
If plans are done, which is very likely most noise made now is basically horsetrading without any horses. Will be interesting to see how this social experiment all pans out one way or the other - public amenities were skimped on last time.....
