    WYW v Galway Women

More competitive game than expected in Ferrycarrig this evening but unfortunately one dominated by Galway as they had an extra gear or two compared to the home side and the gap was accordingly reflected in their final league positions. Wexford started with Nicole, Lauren, Kylie, Abbie, Ellen, Rossi, Meabh, Michaela, Nicola, Aoibheann and Ceola. A good chance apiece started the game as Galway’s Olusola had a one-on-one chance against Nicole Nix in the Wexford goal but the latter prevailed. Immediately after, Abbie Brophy had a great chance at the far post for Wexford but couldn’t convert. It was 1-0 to Galway on twelve minutes when Callanan knocked a shot past Nix in the Wexford goal. A minute later, it was 2-0 when Olusola was sent free down Galway’s right – is that the best performance by an away player at Ferrycarrig this season – and her cross was flicked home by Callanan for 2-0 to Galway. Wexford then allowed a free header to Galway from a set piece but it was headed over the Wexford bar. Wexford’s only decent effort on goal in the latter stages of the first half came from Ellen Molloy but it was sent over the Galway bar. Olusola then nearly created another Galway goal when she caught Nix in possession before crossing another good ball from the right for Galway but it was knocked past Wexford's far post. It was 3-0 to Galway right on halftime when Olusola was sent free down Galway’s right and she finished neatly past Nix to put Galway even further ahead. 3-0 to Galway at halftime. During the first half, Emily Corbet had replaced Ceola Bergin for Wexford after Ceola had suffered a knock.

Wexford played better in the second period but Galway ultimately remained well in control. After Galway’s Jenna Slattery had a shot pushed away well by Nix in the Wexford goal, Wexford’s key player, Ellen Molloy, had a great run and shot but couldn’t threaten Ronayne in the Galway goal as it was deflected for a Wexford corner. From that corner, Kylie Murphy hit the Galway crossbar with a header but that was as good as it got for Wexford. Olusola then almost created a fourth for Galway when she intercepted a Wexford back-pass. Ellen Molloy proved to be Wexford’s main threat again as she forced Ronayne into an excellent save. Final goal went to Galway late on when Olusola knocked the ball home after Nicole Nix could only parry a high shot sailing over her head. Wexford improved after the introduction of subs Lolly Conlon and Edel Kennedy but there are many issues which need to be tackled by Wexford’s new manager whenever he or she is appointed. Best for Wexford were Ellen Molloy (the key to a rejuvenation next year), Lauren Dwyer and Ciara Rossiter. 4-0 to Galway at fulltime.
