    Elections to League of Ireland

Mention of Shamrock Rovers finishing bottom of the League in '75-'76 in the main forum got me thinking about the LoI's fairly opaque process of re-election that applied until quite recently - Scotland has a comprehensive seasonal list of which clubs were successful and/or rejected, even if vote tallies are lacking for the early decades, and the English records are also practically complete, but is there any record, online or otherwise, for the Irish historical stats?

For the oist part it was a formality because of a lack of candidates (unlike, say, England). Many a club applied for reelection again and again without any real prospect of getting dumped. Practically every club that dropped out of the league, certainly since the 20s, was a result of bankruptcy or voluntary withdrawal. The big exception was the shock decision by the league to dump Sligo and Transport in 1962 and drop league membership to 10. Sligo survived a season, thankfully, and returned in 1963, with Drogheda to bring us back to 12.

The English one is interesting. The list includes 10 current Premier League sides.

Interesting info about clubs elected to the LoI First Division. https://www.balls.ie/football/what-h...erry-fc-512315 I don't remember Newcastle United.

Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
