Pat's have most players in team of the season
    Friday, April 12th, 2002
The PFAI Premier Division and First Division teams of the season have been named - with Dublin players accounting for most of the top flight's 11.

Saint Patrick's Athletic had three players in the team - more than any other club - while Shelbourne and Bohemians had two each. A couple of Derry City players were also selected, while Cork City and Shamrock Rovers were both represented.

The team was as follows: Russell Payne (Derry); Peter Hutton (Shels), Darren Kelly (Derry), Colm Foley (St Pat's), Owen Heary (Shels); Charles Mbabazi Livingstone (St Pat's), Paul Osam (St Pat's), Kevin Hunt (Bohs), Ollie Cahill (Cork); Glen Crowe (Bohs), Tony Grant (Shamrock R).

The First Division team was dominated by the top four clubs - Drogheda United, Finn Harps, Dublin City and Waterford United. No other club was represented.

The team was as follows: Gary Rogers (Drogheda); Stephen Gifford (Dublin C), Pádraig Gollogley (Drogheda), David Breen (Waterford), John Frost (Waterford); Johnny Kenny (F Harps), Gary Dempsey (Waterford), Dom Tierney (Drogheda), Paddy McGrenaghan (Harps); Declan O'Brien (Drogheda), Kevin McHugh (Harps).

Beaten FAI Cup finalists Bohs have two players among the nominations for the PFAI player of the year award - Glen Crowe and Kevin Hunt. Tony Grant, Owen Heary, Paul Osam and Darren Kelly are the other nominees.

The First Division's winner will be one of Gary Dempsey, Kevin McHugh or Dom Tierney. Wesley Houlihan (Shels), Robbie Martin (UCD) and Shane Robinson (Shamrock Rovers) will battle for the young player of the year.

That premier Division team would certainly give a good few "better" teams a run for their money in my book. I can't agree with the selection of Pizza Hutton though. I know he's a good player, but playing him at right back is a joke. It worked ok for Shels, but ollie ripped past him every time.

    Yeah

Hutton is no spring chicken, and Tony O Connor, despite having a few dodgy moments, was consistent and secure at right back for Bohs all season.

In fairness Jaime, if Hutton isn't a spring chicken- what's Toccy?! I was thinking they should have put Heary at right back and a natural left-footer at left-back- richie byrne from rovers maybe?

Dont know bout Tony Grant up front. Maybe Jason Byrne instead. Then again nobody really comes close to Crowe so its a tough decision. Cant complain with rest of team though.
