I'm actually quite whelmed by this appointment.

And if he advocates for a 32 county team he'll be the Eire dentist.

I see Southgate has stepped down as England manager. So it'll be two new managers for the game in September - but I've always felt Southgate was holding England back in some ways. If a new manager lets them attack a bit more, we could be in for a very long afternoon in September...

They mention they might have an interim solution for the September games. Lee Carsley to manage vs. Ireland would be a nice way to close off this chapter...

England rattled. They know the real test is coming in September.

Brian Barry Murphy being linked with the Strasbourg job. Finished 13th in Ligue 1 under Vieira last season and are part of the ownership group that owns Chelsea.

Eddie Howe and Graham Potter getting their quotes into the media on the England job.

Surely a professional organization won't take too long to close this out.

If not, will Carsley become the managerial equivalent of a Patrick Bamford - happier to get a game or two for England than plenty with Ireland.

Unless, the FA do go for him but I'd be shocked.

To give the England manager's job to a man who has never held a job in senior men's football and was an Irish iternational would certainly be an interesting decision.

The second the results begin to falter the knives would be out and sharper than ever. He'd have nothing to fall back on like Howe or Potter would.

True. Then again, look at the previous managerial record of Luis de la Fuente:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luis_d...er,_born_1961)

That's pretty sparse and unremarkable, it has to be said. And presumably he got the gig with the Senior Mens' team after working his way up through the under-age groups, so maybe we shouldn't fixate too much on experience managing in adult club football?

While Thomas Frank is another who came into management by a very unusual route - never played professionally, P.E. Teacher, then coaching Youth football etc:
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas...tball_manager)

While The FA may also be influenced by the fact that Southgate himself impressed them managing the U-21's, albeit that he has previous managerial experience (and of course a former international)

No doubt. Then again, such are the levels of expectation after GS's near misses etc, that that would only give Howe or Potter a second campaign, not even that maybe?

Speaking of which, Howe is looking like The FA's first choice, but he's hardly jumping at the chance. Seems that with a major reorganisation taking place at Newcastle, if he can retain the influence and control over team matters he's had until now, he may stay. But if not, he might be more amenable to the England job?

Meanwhile, Potter would take the job in a heartbeat, that much is clear. Anyhow, if neither gets it, for whatever reason, I have a feeling Carsley can't be that far off third place on the list.

You've ignored completely the point that Carsley is an ex Ireland international. Or is that conflated with Frank being an ex PE teacher?

I didn't consciously "ignore" it, rather I was simply addressing the view held by many that LC's lack of experience managing Mens teams should preclude him from consideration for the England gig.

In the same way as I "ignored" eg his coaching badges, which are top notch.

As for TF, I was merely using him as an example of how the traditional route towards a job like always used to require a candidate to be English; an ex-England international player; have managed an English club(s); and be a big "name" (or the best combination of same). TF is none of those bar Brentford, yet I reckon he could do a good job and if reports are to be believed that's he's under consideration (not sure myself), it is to The FA's credit that they may be "thinking outside the box".

Anyhow fwiw, I actually think Carsley could turn out to be very good in the job too, if given time and the right support etc.

Did Barry Fry not urinate in all four corners of St Andrews to get rid of some curse back in the day?? If footballers/managers taking a slash during training is newsworthy, then the LSL is a "journalist's" dream.
