I think he's on a rolling contract, so they'll be due something.

Yeah I don't think the FA will haggle about compensation when he's only got a few months left on his contract.

They'd want this sorted ASAP so they can get another manager in place as they've got two qualifiers in March.

Our next competitive game isn't till September so FAI could wait till August if the FA play hard ball and then they're left paying a managers wages whose gonna leave in August anyway.

It looks like it's Carsley and I'm happy with that.

I'm sure the money side of it will be sorted out fairly amicably between the 2 FAs. With the joint Euros bid going on I'd expect relationships are quite good there

It will be interesting to see if Ashley Cole comes with him, or who he lines up as his backroom staff.

With Carsley it could go pear-shaped. With Lennon or Keane, it absolutely would. Hughton might be a safer choice for a variety of reasons, but i'd be cautiously optimistic if they take the chance on Carsley.

I, for one, welcome our new folically challenged overlord.

Maybe the whole Lennon thing was just a clever ruse by the suits to get everyone on board with Carsley. A kind of "here's the horror show alternative you could have had, so let's all get behind Lee" thing. If it was then it worked!

That is the chance you take with a relatively unknown quantity. Hughton is definitely the safe choice - he would steady the ship and sort out a lot of the issues that bedeviled Kenny's team - he would be a relatively low ceiling but a high floor (and by relatively low ceiling I mean that he is not a top tier coach but he is very competent and he knows what he is doing). Carsley is likely to be the opposite - the potential of a high ceiling but also potentially a low floor.

Definitely wouldn't re-hire any of Kenny's backroom team - they all have to rebuild their reputations.

I think it is questionable if Cole comes with him - Cole might be his replacement with the England U-21s - but - I think the following should be considered - Chris Hughton as a technical advisor (Hughton is a student of the game and can be a very good sounding board for Carsley) - Steven Reid as assistant manager (currently first-team coach at Forest and highly regarded) - Shay Given as goalkeeping coach (in my opinion his role at Derby was underrated - it was Given and Rosenior that kept things afloat there, not Rooney) - another possibility is Andy Reid (U23 coach at Forest).

    Lee Carsley to managed Ireland!

How many months will he last? We should have had that competition the last few times.

Absolutely - there's no guarantees with any of the options here but Carsley is the one who's career seems to be on the way up. Everyone else linked is on the way down. There isn't going to be a miraculous improvement overnight, but if Carsley does come in I'd be cautiously optimistic that 2023 will prove to be the low water mark for us and things will start to steadily improve from here.

Personally I'd be happy for none of the backroom team to be ex Ireland internationals. Steven Reid is probably the only one I'd consider. Too many have been given those roles in recent years for no reason other than they used to play for the team, those lads are no good for anything much beyond putting out the training cones.

He would have to do pretty badly to not get a second campaign here. Unless he does extremely poorly or massively over performs he's likely to be the man until Euro 2028 if he takes it.

Carsleys backroom team will be interesting. He's very well connected so it could be anyone really, doesn't have to be Irish. Anthony Barry was unknown to us before he was brought in so someone like that is possible. Kilbane is best mates and they did jointly approach the FAI years ago so he could be his #2. I'd love to see Brian Barry Murphy be brought in in some capacity but considering Carsley will be very much a training ground coach himself that might not work.

Interesting and exciting times ahead. Delighted that they seem to have gotten the best available candidate

The English lads over on the Big Soccer forum seem delightfully bitter about all this so I'm taking that as a positive sign.

Getting Carsley is a coup. He's won a major tournament with England, extremely highly rated within the FA and is seen as a very progressive coach. We only get him because he actually really wants the job.

Can't imagine Kilbane being involved with him living in Canada these days.

And won't be Brian Barry Murphy unless he quits his job at City. Carsley had to step away from his FA role when he joined City as they don't like their coaches double jobing.

Think it's gonna be someone he's worked with at club level before or an ex international teammate that's coaching. Stephen Reid would be a good pick up as assistant manager and you've also got Andy Reid as part of the first team coaching staff at Forest.

Would love if Carsley could get someone like Mark Warburton in. Left West Ham as he had a different view on football than David Moyes but also talked about wanting to find a role where he had more of a say. No club or country has picked him up yet and should share similar views on how things should be done as both him and Carsley worked together at Brentford.

    Maybe Mark Kennedy?
Worked with Carsley at Man City's academy, and is currently free after leaving Lincoln City
