Most goalkeepers used during an LoI season?

With Arthur Nganou poised to make his League debut against Waterford on Friday, he will become the fifth 'keeper to start for Kerry by round 25, with a sixth, youth netminder Richie Healy, having served on the bench this season, but unused:

    1. Guthrie - Games 1-11.
    2. Scully - 12-13, 20-22
    3. O'Sullivan - 14-19
    4. Axworthy - 23-24
    5. Nganou - 25

That said, taking injuries, Europe, and loan signings into account, I've no doubt other LoI clubs can easily top that figure over historical campaigns!

    Interesting question!

Bohs used 4 in their disaster of a season last year!

    James Talbot
    Stephen McGuinness
    John McCracken
    Reese Byrne

Equals Kerry until their new signing plays and was in the premier division if we want to keep records for both divisions separate

    Cork City goalkeepers this season:

    Oluwayemi, Games 1+2
    Corcoran, 3-11, 14-24
    Moynihan, 12+13
    Brooks, 23
    Byrne, 25

Also, City had Mannix in goals in the MSC, and on the bench in a few league matches.

Was looking at this for UCD recently - in the 1991/92 season, we had three keepers make their senior debuts in the opening four matches. Not quite the same thing, but still an unusual stat.

I think Barry was tried in nets at halftime a few times too.

In the 1999/00 season Galway United used 3 different keepers in the first 3 games. All were club debuts with 2 of them being senior debuts.

Nick Flower started away to Shelbourne in a 1-1 draw, Eddie Hickey made his club debut the following week in a 1-1 draw at home to Drogheda while the following week it was David Forde who made his debut in a 1-4 loss to Cork.

Decent LOI nerd topic to dig through with a half an eye watching the cricket. I only have LOI lineups back to 2006 but since then the teams that have used 5 goalkeepers or more in a LOI season are below

Unsurprisingly all the teams stunk, Athlone certainly win the award for goalkeeper opportunities and the fact Cork City are the only Premier Division team in this timeframe with 5 goalkeepers used with 11 games still to go this season sums up what a farce they currently are

Kilkenny City 2007 x 7 - John McGuinness, Anthony Fennelly, AJ Murray, Jim McDonnell, Lee Walker, Gerry Treacy, Robbie Quan

Athlone Town 2009 x 5 - John McGuinness, Aaron Shanahan, Alex O'Reilly, Barry Andrews, Scott Gaynor

Mervue United 2012 x 5 - Ronan Forde, Brian O'Donoghue, Conor O'Malley, Connor Gleeson, Ger Hanley

Athlone Town 2016 x 5 - Evan Moran, Ryan Coulter, Seán Nolan, Jamie Quinn, Dylan Owens

Athlone Town 2018 x 5 - Nathan Murphy, Luke Kelly, Shaun O'Donnell, Michael Fogarty, Darcy Lawless

Wexford 2018 x 5 - Danny Bolger, Kealan Gaffney, Corey Chambers, Colum Feeney, Aaron Hall

Cork City 2023 x 5 - Tobi Oluwayemi, Jimmy Corcoran, Daniel Moynihan, Tiernan Brooks, Ollie Byrne

Abibi on his own was worth 10 sh1te keepers - I dont know which is worse, sticking with one keeper in the obvious vain hope that they will come good or trying a half dozen lads in desperation....both are soul destroying for everyone especially fans.

Just imagine a show reel of training calamities from clubs that have tried so many keepers, its not just match day errors that would influence the likes of Buckley in to desperately searching for options. As for outfield teamates, it must be tough to know your almost the entire squad think you are muck - keepers have to be unhinged in some way!

On the other hand at Rovers before Alan Mannus' return Stephen Bradley was chopping and changing between Cencinski and Kevin Horgan pretty much every week.

Every time they'd make a mistake they'd be dropped for the other player - that's one way of making the goalkeeper even more uneasy. I suppose they could argue that's how Gavin Bazunu eventually got his chance!

A related LOI GLITW trivia tidbit I completely forgot to mention in my post was that both Robbie Quan and Luke Kelly were outfield players, no not just the occasional outfield players used in an emergency due to their keeper/s getting sent off and/or getting injured, both of them actually started in goal for their clubs in these below matches - one for Cork City to achieve this season

    10/11/2007: Kilkenny City 1 Finn Harps 3 - https://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2007...-kilkennycity/

If you want to add another one of those to the collection - UCD 0-2 Bray, 14/04/91. Our keeper Martin Mulligan arrived late, so Larry O'Gara played in nets instead. It was the only game Mulligan missed all season though.

Four is our record for number of keepers in a season FWIW (three times)

Galway United actually have used a number of outfield players in goal - with remarkable success!

In the 1990/91 season (the year we won the cup) Jimmy Nolan started in goal twice keeping a clean sheet in both games (3-0 A v Limerick City and 1-0 H v Bohs). Unfortunately his unblemished record went in the 1994 League Cup when he started in a 0-1 loss at home to Athlone.

In the 1996 Division 1 Shield Donie Farragher started away to Limerick in our final group game and also kept a clean sheet in a 0-0 draw. We went on to qualify from the group and win the trophy.

In 2010 Rhys Meynell had to deputise in goal away to Derry in the League Cup, which we lost 2-3. Barry Ryan was unavailable for the game. As luck would have it Ryan was sent off a few weeks later before we were able to sign a keeper and Meynell started a league game away to Bray and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win!

Gerard Doherty was part of the squad first half of the season too. Not sure he got many minutes though, if any at all.

Treaty United have had their fair share this season.

    Conor Winn,
    Shane Hallahan,
    Josh Coady (Munster Senior Cup),
Corey Chambers is likely to get a run soon.

Also Michael Dike has been an unused sub.

Cult hero Ger. Some say he's still behind the goals in Dalymount wasting time
