Saddam Hussein fires all but one of his lawyers
13:30 Wednesday August 24th 2005
Saddam Hussein has fired every member of his defence team except for one Iraqi lawyer who is now the only person authorised to represent him.
The move was announced today by the special tribunal set up to try the former Iraqi President, who was overthrown by the United States and Britain in April 2003.
Saddam is due to go on trial in the coming months in relation to a 1982 massacre of around 150 Shi'ites in the town of Dujial, north of Baghdad.
He could receive the death penalty if convicted and the tribunal has suggested he could be executed before he is tried in relation to other alleged atrocities.
Critics have claimed that this execution would be designed to prevent Saddam from speaking out about the help he received from the United States and Britain in the years after the Dujail massacre.
