For the record though, being eye-balled by the pr!ck that started the hassle didn't actually make me feel as comfortable as I have on previous visits to Inchicore and McDowells, and it caused a few of the people I was with to leave early too, so it was a fcuking problem.

Lads I am a total neutral here so don�t take too much offence. But I think all this anti-dub love-in between Cork and Derry is completely artificial.

The reason is this, the expectation on Derry at the start of the season was low and a top two finish represents a great achievement considering recent years. That�s why you Derry folk are happy and contented and going along with whatever the vibe is � if you finish second great, if you finish first even better. The expectation on Cork is huge, but so far they are living up to it, so the Corkonians are mellow and feeling all philanthropic towards their fellow man.

Wait a few weeks until Derry are 3 points �ahead� of Cork and you will notice the Summer of Love feeling will have mysteriously evaporated.

When Dublin clubs are in the top two (which is often the case) the fans don�t slap each others backs and sing songs together about how great Dublin is because they are both focused on their team winning.

In my ideal season Bohs win the league and Rovers, Pats and Shels finish in the bottom three AND the rules of the game are changed so they can all be relegated. I don�t care where anybody else finishes and I expect the very same sentiment from the other Dubs.

You're right on almost all points.
But you can be assured that there is no Anti Dublin feeling in Derry, it's anti Shelbourne and only because of their success.
That's football, in England Everyone hated Manu and loved to see thme beaten.........why???????? because of their success but that feeling will soon turn to Chelsea if they have similar success.

Exactly.

But you don't seem to realise that singing "We fcuking hate Shelbourne" is far from offencive to us, there's nothing I'd love to hear more. What a compliment that as we have our worst season in years and both Citys have their best we're all you can sing about.

When it happens in reverse, that we ever sing a song about Cork or Derry at any game not involving them, I'd be worried.

I do realise it, and the point i'm making is that this happens in every league in the world, the successful team are the team everyone loves to hate but at the same time aspire to be on a par with or better than.

I say again............it's football

I think you may be missing the point here. Having been at the game (and subsequent love-in), the anti-Shels singing (and it was anti-shels rather than anti-Dublin) engaged in by both sets of supporters was incidental to the fact that both sets of fans applauded each other. The was one anti-shels chant + one Oily Byrne chant - the rest were common DCFC + CCFC chants.

The essence of what happened for me was this was something positive in relation to fans at a match as distinct from some of the bad press the league has got recently.

The sentence you are quoting is the lead-in to the actual point I wanted to make.

I don't think I have missed the general point at all.

The great advertisement for the league you speak about was only possible because Cork are top and Derry are second. It doesn't represent any break with tradition or emerging new paradigm that demonstrates that a League dominated by provincial sides is somehow better than one dominated by Dublin sides.

I seem to remember a Bohs-Cork City love-in a few years ago when we won in Tolka to get the title for Bohs. Was that not right either?

Ollie Cahil, a league winner for Shels and Bohs.

And don't get me wrong, much as I enjoyed the hate-fest of our match against Shels it's fairly normal to be able to get along with the fans of other clubs. And that's the way I like it.

Hilarious Longford fans going on about choking.

What other eL side would lose 5-1 to 6th place team in Welsh league who were out of season.

I actually think its a worse result than the Pats 10-0 aggregrate as we definitely know Welsh out season teams are lower standard than the eL.

Longford have a record of choking in Europe & the League. When your top goal scorer after 22 games has only 3 goals whats the point of trying to compete in the league...?

I think Derry and City have a mutual respect that's based on knowing that if you do make the round trip, the opposition can appreciate that journey. In my experience, it's not something that Dublin teams (some of whom can't drag a couple of hundred fans across a river, or to their own stadium for an 'away' game) really have a grasp on IMO.

We mingled after the game, were able to have a pint without worrying that a bunch of casuals with hoods up and scarves over their faces were waiting to have a go off us. Definitely more enjoyable than the away trip in Pat's, where I felt I had to take colours off before heading into McDowells for a pint.

A thoroughly enjoyable trip and stay. Hating opponents takes too much energy, it's easier just to get drunk with them.

Great to see the Brandywell hopping too, RTE got to visit two full stadiums in a week, great atmosphere in both, good advertisement for the league on the whole.

And have no Dublin derbies? It's Hobson's choice isn't it - your local rivals to get relegated or your local rivals to be in the wrong division for being righteously abused?

Solution: Pats to win the League, Bohs Shels and Rovers to all be sh1tting themselves in the playoffs but somehow scrape through on penos after extra time. Not quite the best of both worlds, but near enough.
