Post Mark O'neill-cummins' Eircom Lge Focus

What do you think of the standard of
refereeing in the eircom League? I
    think the standard is great.

We have some of the best officials
anywhere in Europe. Not only that, but
we have female as well as male
    officials, something you don't get
    everywhere.

The referees and their assistants get a
tough time from fans and are often
guilty of making mistakes. But the
important thing to remember is that the
referee is boss and what he or she says
    goes.

They can overrule decisions made by
their assistants and what they say is
    final.

This was very much in evidence at Tolka
    Park last Monday night.

For those that weren't there - this is
    what happened. Declan O'Brien was
    flagged offside by assistant Kieran
Delaney as he ran towards the Shels
    box.

The home defenders stopped in their
tracks, expecting a free out, but ref
John Feighery ignored the flag and
    waved play on.

O'Brien went on to score and put Drogs
3-2 up. However, Jason Byrne snatched a
point for Shels at the death. You can
    understand why the Shels players
    stopped.

There's no easy solution but maybe
players should wait for a whistle
instead of looking at the flag?
Feighery had every right to overrule
    his assistant.

His decision led to Shels players
    confronting the officials and their
management entering the pitch to do
likewise. This has to stop. Not just at
Shels, who are major offenders, but at
    grounds in general.

    Managers, coaches and club officials
have no business entering the field of
    play during the game.

I heard comments from Shels fans that
the decision cost them the two extra
    points. That's not strictly true.

Had the free out been given, the game
would have taken a different flow and
Byrne may not have been in the position
to score that goal, which became an
    equaliser.

But it will be interesting to see if,
come November, Shels miss out on the
Champions League or UEFA Cup places by
    two points.

A number of good points, but dont agree with the standard of the league referees being great

Agree with that totally. Have had a lions share or outright muppets controlling matches in St Mels.

I think the standard of refereeing could and should be a lot better. but it is great to see the investing in the FAI referees academy and i think progress is being made.

The standard of refereeing in the first division is poor. But most of the referees in the league are young and inexpierienced at that level. So i think the standards will improve over the next couple years. ((i would rather them to be young inexperienced and willing to learn than fat and old and bitter)

Fans in every league in the world bitch about referees. Sometimes its justified sometimes its just bias. Look at the decision the other night in the Shels game. the ref got it right yet look at the **** he got over it.
Where you start is not as important as where you finish!!!!

ya every fans bitch, but if you watch any other league there is no getting over the fact that the standard in the Eircom League(well first division anyway) is shocking.I can only think of one match when the ref in the Showgrounds did a good job.

Shame he doesn't mention how the linesman gave offside despte the ball clearly been played by a shels player...

Anyway irish refs are ALL rubbish. Kelly's about the best of them and he's disgracefully bad. And before anyone starts I know its tough and I wouldn't want to do it but thta doesn't mean they're any good

Is this a serious writer? thought it was a plss take at first. Where does he write? Standard is abysmal, you'd get better from a secondary school student!

I have to say, fair play to the ref on that occassion. Stopping play, putting your hand up etc. are just attempts to influence the ref and try to intimidate him. IMHO I think it should be treated in the same manner as diving in the box.

How is it supposed to work? Referee doesn't see incident ...player complains...gets free? A rule like in rugby where only the team captain can consult with the ref should be brought in, then maybe we'd be spared a sight like Hawkins eyes nearly popping out of his head in the shels-cork game. The only people shouting at the ref should be the fans, after all, thats what we paid in for, right ?

A demonstration of appalling refereeing. Joxer sent off for slipping by a weak ref succumbing to bullies.

In fairness i would have had the same angle as the ref had and i was convienced that Joxer had dived, he was only on the pitch about 30 seconds and he went flying in the box, he still lkook for the peno thou, eyes stright towards the ref when he hit the turf

and yeah, he was'nt his arse sent off !

Oops! Thank you for pointing that out. My well-honed EL fan's sense of grievance got the better of me there.
Still, you get the point. It clearly wasn't a dive. Was he carded for looking at the ref?

Does this fella know anything about football

I sure as hell don't understand why they stopped it's part of "the basics" to play the whistle.

Every single word that comes out of that mans mouth, pen, keyboard and quill is utter, utter unrefined excrement. The man is a moron plain and simple. I'd rather he didn't have an EL page on Aertel, just makes a joke of the league (or at least people who know something about it)

paul duddy has dedicated his life to proving this guy wrong. probably only rovers fans who know him cos he does nearly all our home games. yes that does make sense that a referee from donegal should do all our games

I think on average its a good old column and its better then nothing, I think he's right to throw in all these odd remarks and simplify the articles to allow for non-EL fans and I'd say there's a fair few who would read it, but not go to games too regularly!

    Keep it up!
