Wexford put in a good shift in Ferrycarrig this evening but ultimately couldn’t match a more powerful Galway side who deserved the three points although Wexford won’t be happy with the concession of either goal. Wexford began with Charlie, Ben, Hughie, Karl, Brandon, Dobbsy, Mathew, James, Corban, Kian and Reece. Wexford started with a containing 4-5-1 with Dobbsy up front. There was a lot of head tennis for the first twenty minutes or so as both sides found it hard to create chances. Although Galway won a few corners, the powerful aerial threat of Galway was generally controlled well by a Wexford defence capably led by Charlie Heffernan in the Wexford goal. A further Galway corner then resulted in the first away goal when McCormack’s near post corner somehow crept in at that post. Charlie Heffernan appeared to be impeded perhaps by one of his defenders. 1-0 to Galway. Wexford’s first real effort on goal came on 28 minutes when Dobbsy got his head to a good cross by the very effective Reece Webb, but it went a couple of yards wide. Heffernan then pushed away a header by Francely Lomboto and soon did even better to prevent Galway’s Stephen Walsh from scoring in a one-on-one situation. A blaze over by Galway’s Borden right at the end of the half then kept the second half potentially more interesting. 1-0 to Galway at half-time.
Second half continued to be dominated by Galway although Wexford did look dangerous when they managed to keep the ball down with Webb posing a threat down the right and Karl Chambers having his best game for the home side. The second goal for Galway came on 14 minutes when Wexford were organising their wall at a Galway free but it was taken before the referee whistled and passed into the net. Referee gave it and it was 2-0. Interestingly, Wexford had an identical free at the other end five minutes later and the ‘whistle’ condition was imposed by the referee. A bad clash of heads between Galway’s McCarthy and Wexford’s Karl Chambers resulted in Ollie Horgan getting a yellow for pitch encroachment. Nearest Wexford came to scoring was when substitute, Sean Fitzpatrick, who looked very promising, turned the ball onto his left and clipped the top of the Galway crossbar. 2-0 to Galway at the end with Hughie Douglas and Aaron Dobbs also doing well for Wexford. Crowd was reported to be 616.
