William Anders, Apollo 8 astronaut who took the famous Earthrise photo. Died age 90 in a plane crash - he was the pilot, so safe to say he had a full life till the end.

Tommy was a close friend of Keane's and a Man U fan. It was like Mary Lou interviewing Gerry Adams - no difficult question was ever going to be asked. Tommy Gorman was probably one of the few people Keane would have done the interview for.

Sad and bizarre losing two big RTE personalities on the same day. RIP.

John O’Mahoney, former Gaelic footballer, manager and pundit, TD and Senator, and my old teacher for five years in secondary school, only 71.

He was nick-named Savage in school, one of those opposite names that only teenage lads can come up with with absolute certainty their logic is right. I don’t think I ever saw him lose his temper – and it wasn’t for lack of trying from some of the yahoos he taught…

We’re in his classroom. Two of the lads have been having fun all day, hurling insults in Aussie accents straight out of Home and Away, Season 1. 'Tim' has his arms crossed on the desk, head down on them, eyes shut. He hears the door close and thinks it’s John leaving (it’s one of the lads coming in late).
Tim: (jumps up, nearly overturning his chair) Fahck off ya pommie baaahstud.
    John: What’s that, now, Tim?
Tim: (realising his mistake) Aaaah… nothing, sir. Just playing a game with one of the lads.
    John: Well, maybe don’t.

Another time, checking homework in class, I realised I didn’t have mine with me. I knew it was done – mine was always done. I was sure it was in my locker. He told me to get it. But it wasn’t: I'd left it at home. Walking back to his classroom I knew I was going to get detention. I’d never been on detention (if you think I'm boring now, I was the most boring swot of a kid you could imagine!). He saw me walk in, clocked the empty hands. And carried on teaching.

That was as far as those things went. Nobody sent to the principal, no punishment handed out. No need, point made. He had a knack of knowing what worked for the person. It served him well. And those of us lucky enough to have been on the receiving end of it.
Hello, hello? What's going on? What's all this shouting, we'll have no trouble here!
    - E Tattsyrup.
