Bit late, but Viktor Chanov, the sub keeper who came on for the USSR against us in Euro 88 after Dassayev injured himself pole-axing Tony Galvin (but no peno) is dead.

Was apparently beaten to death back in Feb, says wikipedia.

So the years finally reeled him in. Sad news. Only last week a friend was saying how much he was looking forward to the gig.

I believe they've been doing a few gigs without him recently (working around his illness) so maybe not all lost.

I remember his broadcasts well. I've an odd nostalgia for those old-style news readers. Tons of gravitas and proper diction. No getting fake news onto their autocues!

Retired in 1992! 25 years of retirement. Not bad at all.

Ah that's too bad. He always had good stories when he did radio interviews...I like that scene in Casino where he has to lie to the Boss. What could I say? If I told the truth we all could have gotten whacked.
