Independent TD Tony Gregory has died at the age of 61 after a long illness.
The Dublin Central TD died in St Francis Hospice, Raheny, this morning, after a long battle with cancer.

TD in my constituency but did not even know he was sick but would explain why not heard anything from him via the media recently.

RIP Tony Gregory. A man I always felt cared for those in his constituency, and who genuinely tried to do whatever he could for them.

Used to be my TD for as long as I lived in Dublin: a good man who always put his constituents first, famously dating back to when he got in in 1981 or 82. I knew a few of the people he worked with fairly well, and they had the utmost of respect for him. He'll be badly missed.

Interestingly, both he and Bertie have been in the same constituency for a fair spell, and were half of Dublin Central's representatives, repectively pulling in just under and well over the quota. Now two of the more iconic Irish politicians, for vastly different reasons, will be leaving a huge void.

Very Sad, A Man of principles, integrity, and a loyalty to his constituents very rare traits in todays society and even rarer in the world of politics, he will be greatly missed.

They were the ones he represented. He did more good by keeping his influence local than going on the wider political stage. If we had more like him throughout the Country, everywhere would be a better place to live. As it is, we only have politicians who are interested in themselves and their own personal advancement.

What makes the people of the North inner city any more important than anyone other disadvantaged people in the country. He sold his vote to keep Haughey in power.

I think he got involved in the Shell to sea stuff in Mayo and also the planes landing in Shannon so to say that he just looked after the people of north central is very harsh.

They're not more important, but they were his constituents, and he tried to help them. It's not all that common to see a politician who gives a **** about any of his constituents bar those with fat wallets, but I respect Tony Gregory for being one.

That's a question for all the other politicians who are in a position to wield their mandate for the benefit of their own areas, yet choose to follow the party line like sheep.
As for selling his vote to Haughey, he actually got the deal of the century to get money for the good of his locality.

Gregory cared about people in deprived areas. He was a proper public representative who was only interested in the well being of his community and not his own bank balance, unlike most of his fellow constituency TDs. If all the TDs in this country had the same attitude, moral courage and principles as Gregory, Ireland would be a far better place.
