The rants are not exactly what he should be remembered for. It was clear to anybody who saw him the few times he was "interviewed" on TV that he was mentally ill in a serious way. He was off his rocker.
He was the best ever chess player in the world.
When he was more sane (or less insane) in 1972 he blazed his way to the world title by trouncing 3 of the top 10 grandmasters. This was unheard of. The final series against Spassky was never off the world headline news.
