People outside France don't know what a big name he was (In his day),saw some footage of a gig he did in Parc De Princes in 1993 and it was wedged, his gig in front of the Eiffel Tower in 2000 had a crowd estimated at about half a million. He sang to more than 750,000 at a free concert he held near the Eiffel Tower again on France’s Bastille Day national holiday in 2009.

King Michael of Romania https://www.theguardian.com/world/20...l-1-of-romania Interesting career that spanned his country's alliance with the Nazis, changing sides to the Allies, Soviet invasion and forced abdication and exile.

I was in Bucharest recently, a tour guide talked a bit about the royal family. Michael was admired, but in "Ah sure, isn't he nice" sort of way, in that he was a harmless old man whose return reflected well on the country. The grandson was more outwardly liked, but had just been removed from the line of succession (as the linked obituary notes). Not that it would appear to matter, the monarchy being an empty vessel.

I met him once, he was a genuinely terrific guy. He came across as he had all the time in the world for you and just a really nice guy.

Another one I missed at the time - Benjamin Massing died last month at the age of 55. Best known for one of the worst fouls in World Cup history -

Peter Sutherland, 71, former AG, EC Commissioner, DG of GATT, chair of Goldman Sachs, UN Special Rep on Migration, and a lot more besides. It's only when you see everything he did you realise how highly regarded he was internationally.

I think that team also included another great black player in Laurie Cunningham who died in his early 30s.

Dolores O'Riordan of the Cranberries, aged 46.

Gutted by that one. A huge talent, they never got quite as big as they should have in my opinion.

They were massive. Couldn't say that about them. Over 40 million records sold says it all!

When people think of music and Ireland, the kind of acts that come to mind first are U2 and Thin Lizzy.

For me, Cranberries should be up there too. I know they were huge, I know they sold a lot of records, but I'm saying they weren't quite as big as they should have been. Dolores wrote some of the finest lyrics to ever come out of this country.
