City Hunting for 3 new players : Evening Echo 6th April 2002

    by Mark Woods Evening Echo

Cork City are speaking to three experienced players with a view to signing them for the new season which starts in July.
Club owner Brian Lennox confirmed this to the Echo today and also added that manager Liam Murphy is on the hunt for players in the US.
"He's due back from Boston in 10 days and we'll then go across to England to look at some more," Lennox said.
City don't intend a huge clear out of players, but the new owner stressed the importance of strengthening the squad from last season.
"If the new players blend with the youngsters I can't see a reason why we can't be in with a shout for honours," he added.
Lennox would only say some of them had eircom League experience.
"Everybody knows we need a forward and a central midfield player but those are not the only two areas we're looking at improving. The position regarding Ollie Cahill's future remains unclear. The ball is in Ollie's court and it's up to him to come back to us."
Lennox is busy building the right structures for the era of summer soccer in Ireland.
"Cork City FC must become professional off the pitch first. It would be illogical to conduct our business any other way. We will have a new office and club phone line at Turners Cross which we are renting from the Munster Football Association,
"We must also look for land to develop our own training facilities. Until such time as the infra-structure is right we won't be in a position to go with a professional squad."

Yes - experienced brings certain players to mind alright. Patsy is experienced!

But I think even Liam O'Brien brought something to City...briefly...like a few nice touches and a goal direct from a free kick.

All I remember Liam O'Brien doing in his time with city was coming off the bench to almost immeadiately score long range equaliser v rovers in the cup up in santry.

Ah Liam was great, sure if you had a sore neck or a hangover at a match all you had to do was watch him and it didn't take any effort- sure he never left the centre circle! STUPID JUDAS %/($(/%§&"§&%

I remember that ..... that was great .... the City support went mad and security guards (all two of them) came up on the steps between us and the Waterford fans, i dont know why because there wasn't a peep out of them. The coolest thing that night was the ghostbusters pouring the tea. T'was a great cuppa alright.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

i remember it well. as for LOB i think a lot of city fans were so dissapointed in his general play that season some actually wondered why we were actually paying money for him at all?

i also rememebr himscoring a cracker against drogheda in the cross at the end of the season at the shed end.

so please to brian and liam no more liam o'briens (though I reckon we will end up getting stephen geoghan and martin russell)
    john flynn? - awesome!!!!!!

Laurent Kabila ? Yes, he'd beef up the attack all right.

Seriously though, Dave Hill was a good signing although he played his best football when he was with a better team and consequently won the Double.

Most foreigners are a waste of time because they inevitably beedle off if things aren't to their liking. Nearly all the American players leave after a season, not to mention most of the English ones ( ask any Sligo Rovers fan ). Players from countries with poor leagues make the best signings as they have nowhere to go back to e.g. Eric Lavine, Charles Mbabzi Livingstone etc.
