    WYW v Bohemians

Wexford suffered what’s likely to be a fatal blow to their title ambitions as , in a match of very few chances, it was Bohs who created the better ones and ultimately left the home side with few complaints. Wexford were missing a number of their established players with Rianna Jarrett and Kylie Murphy both missing and with the home side then further hit by the late withdrawal of Ciara Rossiter just before the game started. Wexford knew that they had to win to leapfrog Bohs in the league standings and began with Maeve, Louise, Lolly, Abbey, Emily, Aine Walsh, Meabh, Michaela, Nicola, Aoibheann and Freya. Wexford probably shaded the first half as they kept the ball reasonably well but their difficulty was their inability to put Rachel Kelly in the Bohs goal under any pressure. Nearest Wexford came to scoring in the first period was when Michaela Lawrence had a shot deflected for a Wexford corner and Freya De Mange curled a free-kick over the Bohs wall which Rachel Kelly grabbed comfortably. In contrast, other than a couple of corners, Bohs were also unable to trouble Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal. 0-0 at half-time and an obvious game where the first goal would be crucial.

Game opened up slightly more in the second half and, on six minutes, Maeve Williams got down well to block a one-on-one with a Bohs attacker. On nine minutes, Wexford had their best chance of the game when a Wexford cross travelled a long way to the far post where Abbie Brophy of Wexford scooped her shot over the Bohs bar from close in. On 21 minutes, Wexford’s Nicola Sinnott drilled a shot a yard wide when set up just on Bohs eighteen yard line. Three minutes later, Bohs got the lead goal when Kira Bates Crosbie and Sarah Rowe played a neat one-two down Wexford’s left leaving Rowe to finish neatly off the inside of the far post for 1-0 to Bohs. After Abbie Brophy had a shot past Rachel Kelly which was comfortably cleared off the Bohs goal-line, it was Bohs who went two goals ahead when sub Niamh Prior had a tap-in from close in after a good Bohs cross from the right. Bohs then grabbed a third when Mia Dodd won the ball off Wexford’s defence and smacked a low shot past Williams. So, 3-0 to Bohs at the end with Wexford playing reasonably well until the concession of the first goal but not creating anything like a sufficient goal threat over the ninety minutes.
